Sheeting with composite image that floats

Abstract

Microlens sheetings with composite images are disclosed, in which the composite image floats above or below the sheeting, or both. The composite image may be two-dimensional or three-dimensional. Methods for providing such an imaged sheeting, including by the application of radiation to a radiation sensitive material layer adjacent the microlenses, are also disclosed.

16 claims: 9 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
A sheeting, comprising :at least one layer of microlenses, the layer having first and second sides ;a layer of material disposed adjacent the first side of the layer of microlenses ;an at least partially complete image formed in the material associated with each of a plurality of the microlenses, wherein the image contrasts with the material ;and a composite image, provided by the individual images, that appears to the unaided eye to be floating above or below the sheeting, or both.
  2. 5
The sheeting of any of claims 1 to 4, further comprising a spacer layer disposed between the material layer and the microlenses.
  3. 6
The sheeting of any of the preceding claims, wherein the sheeting is (i) an exposed lens sheeting or (ii) an embedded lens sheeting.
  4. 7
The sheeting of any of the preceding claims, wherein the microlenses are selected from plano-convex lenslets, round double convex lenslets, rods, microspheres, beads and cylindrical lenslets.
  5. 8
The sheeting of any of the preceding claims, wherein the composite image is perceptible across a viewing angle of less than one hundred (100) degrees and preferably disappears and reappears when the angle at which the sheeting is viewed changes.
  6. 10
The sheeting of any of the preceding claims, wherein the layer of microlenses comprise a plurality of microlenses and a plurality of individual images are associated with each of the plurality of microlenses, and the individual images are formed of an object, wherein at least one of said individual images is a partial image.
  7. 14
The sheeting of any of claims 10 to 13, wherein each individual image is associated with a different one of the plurality of microlenses. a composite image,
  8. 15
The sheeting of any of the preceding claims, wherein the composite image is provided by summing together the individual images.
  9. 16
The sheeting of any of the preceding claims, wherein each individual image is a different perspective of the composite image.
