13 claims: 3 independent, 10 dependent

  1. 1
A sheeting (600; 700; 800; 900) comprising:a single layer (630;902) of translucent, radiation-sensitive material having on a first surface an array of hemi-spheroidal or hemi-aspheroidal microlenses (602;702) and comprising one or more images at positions internal to the layer of material, formed by focusing energy of light rays at regions within the sheeting to provide localized damage sites as images within the sheeting, wherein at least one of the images is a partially complete image, and each of the images is associated with a different one of the microlenses, and a second substantially planar surface, and wherein the microlenses (602;702) have refractive surfaces that transmit light to positions within the layer (630;902) of material to produce a composite image from the partially complete images formed within the layer of material so that the composite image appears to float above the sheeting (600;700;800;900), float below the sheeting (600;700;800;900), or float in the plane of the sheeting (600;700;800;900) when viewed by an observer under reflected or transmitted light.
  2. 10
The sheeting of any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein:said single layer of material has said microlenses (702) formed on a first side and has a retroreflective portion (704) formed on a second side opposite the microlenses (702), wherein the layer of material includes one or more images formed between the microlenses (702) and the retroreflective portion (704).
  3. 13
A sheeting (800) having first and second sides (802, 804), comprising:a single layer of translucent, radiation-sensitive material having on a first surface an array of hemi-spheroidal or hemi-aspheroidal microlenses and on a second surface an array of hemi-spheroidal or hemi-aspheroidal microlenses formed opposite the first surface of microlenses, wherein the single layer of material includes one or more partially complete images formed internally to the single layer of material, by incident energy from an energy source that modifies the sheeting to form partial images, and each of the partial images is associated with a different one of the microlenses, and wherein, from the partial images, the first surface of microlenses and the second surface of microlenses produce a composite image being the sum of the partial images, that can be viewed from both the first side and the second side (802, 804) of the sheeting (800) and appears to float in front of the sheeting when viewed by an observer.
