  1. 1
A cover layer (40) for a vacuum wound therapy dressing comprising:a backing layer (44) formed from a flexible moisture vapor permeable polymeric membrane;an adhesive layer (48) adapted to affix the backing layer over a wound bed (w) and provide a substantially fluid-tight seal around a perimeter of the wound bed;and a reinforcement layer (46) affixed to the backing layer, the reinforcement layer having a mesh structure comprising materials selected from polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, nylon and polypropylene that extends to a peripheral region of the backing layer so as to reinforce a vacuum reservoir over the wound bed;and a vacuum port affixed to the backing layer wherein the backing layer further comprises an aperture therein for facilitating connection of the vacuum port to the cover.
  2. 6
A wound dressing system, which comprises:a contact layer (34) adapted for positioning adjacent a wound bed (w);an absorbent filler (38) positioned adjacent the contact layer within the wound bed for collecting liquids exuding from the wound bed;a cover layer (40) positioned over the wound bed defining a vacuum reservoir therebetween, the cover layer comprising a backing layer (44) formed from a flexible moisture vapor permeable polymeric membrane, an adhesive layer (48) to provide a seal around the wound bed, and a reinforcement layer (46) having a mesh structure comprising materials selected from polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, nylon and polypropylene affixed to the backing layer wherein the reinforcement layer extends to a peripheral region of the cover layer;and a vacuum system (12) in fluid communication with the vacuum reservoir.
