Apparatus and method for resource allocation in a MIMO-OFDM communication system

Abstract

Techniques to schedule terminals for data transmission on the downlink and/or uplink in a MIMO-OFDM system based on the spatial and/or frequency "signatures" of the terminals. A scheduler forms one or more sets of terminals for possible (downlink or uplink) data transmission for each of a number of frequency bands. One or more subhypotheses may further be formed for each hypothesis, with each sub-hypothesis corresponding to (1) specific assignments of transmit antennas to the terminal(s) in the hypothesis (for the downlinks) or (2) a specific order for processing the uplink data transmissions from the terminal(s) (for the uplink). The performance of each sub-hypothesis is then evaluated (e.g., based on one or more performance metrics).; One sub-hypothesis is then selected for each frequency band based on the evaluated performance, and the one or more terminals in each selected sub-hypothesis are then scheduled for data transmission on the corresponding frequency band.

  1. 1
A method for wireless communication, comprising:forming a plurality of sets of terminals for possible data transmission on a resource, each set including at least one terminal;evaluating performance of each of the plurality of sets of terminals;selecting a set of terminals among the plurality of sets of terminals based on the performance of each set of terminals;and scheduling the at least one terminal in the selected set of terminals for data transmission on the resource.
  2. 11
An apparatus for wireless communication, comprising:means for forming a plurality of sets of terminals for possible data transmission on a resource, each set including at least one terminal;means for evaluating performance of each of the plurality of sets of terminals;means for selecting a set of terminals among the plurality of sets of terminals based on the performance of each set of terminals;and means for scheduling the at least one terminal in the selected set of terminals for data transmission on the resource.
  3. 21
An apparatus for wireless communication, comprising:at least one processor configured to form a plurality of sets of terminals for possible data transmission on a resource, each set including at least one terminal, to evaluate performance of each of the plurality of sets of terminals, to select a set of terminals among the plurality of sets of terminals based on the performance of each set of terminals, and to schedule the at least one terminal in the selected set of terminals for data transmission on the resource.
  4. 23
A method for wireless communication, comprising:determining channel state information for at least one antenna at a terminal;sending the channel state information to a base station;and receiving a grant scheduling the terminal for data transmission on a resource, wherein the terminal is in a set of terminals scheduled for data transmission on the resource, the set of terminals being selected from a plurality of sets of terminals based on performance of each set of terminals, the performance of the set of terminals scheduled for data transmission being determined based at least on the channel state information from the terminal.
  5. 24
A computer program for performing a method of any of claims 1 to 10.
