  1. 1
Method for controlling the establishment or modification of a connection (113) for a subscriber having a subscription in a communication network, - wherein the communication network comprises control nodes (102;104;106) through which control signals are routed and payload nodes (108;110;112) through which payload data is routed and - wherein the connection (113) is to be established or modified between the payload nodes (108;110;112) that are adapted to employ a coding scheme selected from a plurality of supported coding schemes (301;302;303) affecting connection quality, wherein - an information element (120) is relayed between the control nodes (102;104;106) comprising expected accumulated impairment values (126) associated with the coding schemes (301;302;303), - wherein the information element (120) also comprises a subscribed quality level indicator (127) indicating a target quality level for the subscriber associated with the subscription, - wherein the control node (102;106) controlling the connection receives the information element (120) and selects a coding scheme to be employed for the connection (113) such that the associated expected accumulated impairment value (126) is within the range of allowed impairment values indicating an allowed impairment of the connection (113) which corresponds to the subscribed quality level (127).
  2. 4
Method according to any of the claims 2 - 3, wherein an expected resource usage of a network resource associated with employing the at least one of the supported coding schemes (301;302;303) is determined, and wherein the node controlling the connection (102;104;106) selects the coding scheme to be employed such that the associated expected resource usage is minimized.
  3. 7
Method according to any of the claims 4 - 6, wherein an indicator (129) is received in the node controlling the connection (102;106) indicating that the expected resource usage of a network resource should be minimized, and wherein the node controlling the connection checks the indicator and determines to minimize the resource usage.
  4. 8
Method according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the subscribed quality level is associated with a subscriber data record.
  5. 9
Method according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the subscribed quality level is derived from an identification of the subscriber.
  6. 10
Method according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the subscribed quality level is the quality level of a call originating subscriber.
  7. 11
Method according to any of the claims 1 - 9, wherein the subscribed quality level is checked when a list of supported coding schemes (120) potentially employed for the connection and sent between nodes controlling the connection is assembled.
  8. 12
Method according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the node controlling the connection checks the subscribed quality level (127) of a calling subscriber and the subscribed quality level of a called subscriber when it selects the coding scheme to be employed.
  9. 13
Method according to any of the claims 1 - 11, wherein a first coding scheme is to be employed for a first transmission direction of the connection to be established or modified, a second coding scheme is to be employed for a second transmission direction of the connection to be established or modified, that is different from the first transmission direction, and wherein the subscribed quality level of a calling subscriber is checked when the first coding scheme is selected and the subscribed quality level of the called subscriber is checked when the second coding scheme is selected.
  10. 14
Network node (102;106) for controlling the establishment or modification of a connection (113) for a subscriber having a subscription in a communication network, - wherein the communication network comprises control nodes (102;104;106) through which control signals are routed and payload nodes (108;110;112) through which payload data is routed and - wherein the connection (113) is to be established or modified between payload nodes (108;110;112) that are adapted to employ a coding scheme selected from a plurality of supported coding schemes affecting connection quality, whereby - a quality level determining unit receives (205) an information element which is relayed between the control nodes comprising a subscribed quality level (127) indicating a target quality level for the subscriber that is associated with the subscription, and expected accumulated impairment values (126) associated with the coding schemes, and - a processing unit checks (206) the subscribed quality (127) level in a decision to select a coding scheme to be employed for the connection (113) such that the associated expected accumulated impairment value (126) is within the range of allowed impairment values indicating an allowed impairment of the connection (113) which corresponds to the subscribed quality level (127).
  11. 16
Program unit on a data carrier loadable into a network node (102; 106), for instructing the network node (102; 104; 106) to perform the following steps when the program unit is run on the network node (102; 106):- controlling the establishment or modification of a connection (113) for a subscriber having a subscription in a communication network, wherein the communication network comprises control nodes (102;104;106) through which control signals are routed and payload nodes (108;110;112) through which payload data is routed and wherein the connection is to be established or modified between payload nodes (108;110;112) that are adapted to employ a coding scheme selected from a plurality of supported coding schemes affecting connection quality, - receiving (205) an information element which is relayed between the control nodes comprising a subscribed quality level (127) indicating a target quality level for the subscriber that is associated with the subscription, and expected accumulated impairment values (126) associated with the coding schemes (113), and - checking (206) the subscribed quality level (127) in a decision to select a coding scheme to be employed for the connection (113) such that the associated expected accumulated impairment value (126) is within the range of allowed impairment values indicating an allowed impairment of the connection (113) which corresponds to the subscribed quality level (127).
