  1. 1
A system comprising:a programmer (19) comprising: a user interface (98) configured to display at least one view of a representation of an implantable lead having a complex electrode array geometry, and to receive user input defining at least one stimulation field on the representation of the lead, wherein for an axial lead, the complex electrode array geometry comprises an array of electrodes positioned at different axial positions along the length of the lead as well as at different angular positions about the circumference of the lead, and, for a paddle lead or a lead having a polygonal cross-section in a plane transverse to a longitudinal axis of the lead, the complex electrode array geometry comprises an array of electrodes positioned on multiple planes or faces of the lead;a memory (90) that stores a plurality of predefined volumetric stimulation templates and a processor (88) configured to select, based on the at least one user-defined stimulation field, at least one of the plurality of predefined volumetric stimulation templates which are stand or said memory prior to the user interface receiving user input defining the at least one stimulation field, and to select an electrical stimulation parameter set associated with the selected volumetric stimulation template in the memory.
  2. 4
The system of any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the processor selects the volumetric stimulation template based on a determination that the template fills at least a portion of the stimulation field without covering any portion of the anatomical region not included in the stimulation field.
  3. 5
The system of any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the processor selects the one or more volumetric stimulation templates based on a determination that the templates fill at least the entire stimulation field.
  4. 6
The system of any of claims 1 to 5, wherein the user interface presents a side view and a cross-sectional view of the representation of the lead.
  5. 7
The system of any of claims 1 to 6, wherein the user interface presents a side view of and a concentric axial view of the representation of the lead.
  6. 8
The system of any of claims 1 to 7, wherein the user interface presents an unwrapped two-dimensional array view of the representation of the lead.
  7. 9
The system of any of claims 1 to 8, wherein the user interface receives a drawing of the stimulation field on the representation of the lead.
  8. 10
The system of any of claims 1 to 9, wherein the user interface presents a representation of the stimulation field on the representation of the lead, and receives user input modifying the representation of the stimulation field.
  9. 11
The system of any of claims 1 to 10, wherein the processor adjusts the at least one of the plurality of volumetric stimulation templates based on the stimulation field.
  10. 12
The system of any of claims 1 to 11, wherein the user interface comprises at least one of a touchscreen and a pointing device.
  11. 13
The system of any of claims 1 to 12, wherein the programmer comprises at least one of a patient programmer or a clinician programmer.
