15 claims: 2 independent, 13 dependent

  1. 1
A control system (10) comprising:a plurality of field devices (FD1 - FD9);a host computer (12) adapted to send control messages to and to receive response messages from the field devices (FD1 - FD9);a plurality of wireless nodes (20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30) adapted to cycle between a sleep state and an active state according to a wireless network (14) power cycle, at least one of the field devices (FD1 - FD9) being associated with each node (20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30);and a gateway (18) between the host computer (12) and the wireless nodes (20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30);characterized in that the gateway (18) is adapted to provide the host computer (12), in response to a message addressed to one of the field devices (20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30), a predicted time value of when the field device (FD1 - FD9) will respond to the message so that the host computer will not treat absence of a response message prior to the predicted time value elapsing as a communication failure.
  2. 11
A method of communicating between a host computer (12) and field devices (FD1 FD9), the method comprising:delivering a control message addressed to a selected field device (FD1 - FD9) from the host computer (12) to a wireless network (14);periodically turning on the wireless nodes (20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30) to transmit and receive messages;transmitting a control message to a selected field device (FD1 - FD9) over the wireless network (14) to a wireless node (20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30) associated with the selected field device (FD1 - FD9);turning on the field device (FD1 - FD9) in response to a control message received that is addressed to the selected field device (FD1 - FD9);generating a response message from the selected field device (FD1 - FD9);transmitting the response message over the wireless network (14);and delivering the response message to the host;characterized by providing to the host computer (12) a predicted response time for a response from the selected field device (FD1 - FD9) so that the host computer will not treat absence of a response message prior to the predicted time value elapsing as a communication failure.
