    Claims of equivalent WO 2007079319 A2 What is claimed is:1. A manifold (46) for connection to a medical/surgical waste collection unit, the waste collection unit (30) having a receiver (44) for receiving the manifold, said manifold comprising: a housing (158, 164) having a void space, the housing dimensioned to fit in the waste collection unit receiver;at least one fitting (48) attached to said housing that extends away from the housing, said fitting dimensioned to receive a suction line (50) and defining a fluid communications path into the housing void space;and an outlet opening (170) in the housing that allows fluid from said void space into the waste collection unit;characterized in that the housing is formed with a valve driver (170), the valve driver positioned to engage a valve unit (132) integral with the waste collection unit (30) that regulates flow from the receiver, wherein positioning of said housing in the receiver results in displacement of the valve unit by said valve driver.

    The manifold of Claim 1, wherein said housing has section formed to define a keyhole for receiving a complementary component (138) of the valve unit, the keyhole being said valve driver.

    The manifold of Claims 1 or 2, the housing outlet opening (170) is the valve driver.

    The manifold of Claims 1, 2 or 3, wherein:said housing has an axis around which said housing is rotated to seat said housing in the receiver;and said valve driver is positioned on said housing so as to be off-center from the rotational axis of said housing so that, as the housing rotates, said valve driver rotates.

    The manifold of Claims 1, 2, 3 or 4, wherein said valve driver is position to engage and displace the valve unit so that, upon insertion of the manifold in the receiver, the valve driver opens the valve unit to allow flow from the receiver.

    The manifold of Claims 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5, wherein said valve driver is positioned to engage and displace the valve unit so that, upon removal of the manifold from the receiver, the valve driver closes the valve unit.

    The manifold of Claims 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6, further including a filter disposed in said housing between said fitting and the outlet opening.

    A manifold (46) for connection to a medical/surgical waste collection unit, the waste collection unit having a receiver (44) for receiving the manifold, said manifold comprising:a housing (158, 164) defining a void space, said housing further including: at least one fitting (48) for receiving a suction line (50) that defines a fluid communications path into the void space;and an outlet opening (170) that allows fluid flow from said void space;and a drip stop (174) fitted to the housing outlet opening, the drip stop having a valve (187, 190) that selectively restricts blocks fluid flow out of the housing outlet opening;disposed over the outlet opening, characterized in that: the housing outlet opening (170) is dimensioned to receive a fitting (136) integral with the receiver (30);the drip stop valve (187, 190) is normally closed and is positioned to be actuated by the receiver fitting so that, upon the seating of the fitting in the outlet opening, the fitting opens the valve;and the housing includes a seal (187, 274) that, when the receiver fitting is in the outlet opening, establishes a barrier between the housing and the fitting.

    The manifold of Claim 8, wherein the drip stop includes a plurality of lips (187) that are moveably mounted to said housing, said lips extending over the housing opening and having a first position in which said lips abut and a second position when the receiver fitting is inserted in the housing outlet opening wherein said lips are spaced apart from each other so that said lips function as the drip stop valve.

    The manifold of Claims 8 or 9 wherein the drip stop (188a) valve and said seal (274) are separate elements.

    The manifold of Claims 8, 9 or 10, wherein the drip stop valve and seal are formed from a single section of material (174, 174a)

    The manifold of Claims 8 or 11, wherein said drip stop (174) includes a plurality of lips (187) that are moveably mounted to said housing, said lips extending over the housing opening and having a first position in which said lips abut and a second position when the receiver member is inserted in the housing outlet opening wherein said lips are spaced apart from each other and extend between said housing and said receiver member so that said lips function as the drip stop valve and said seal.

    The manifold of Claims 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12, further including a filter disposed in the housing void space between said fitting and the outlet opening.

    A manifold (46) for connection to a medical/surgical waste collection unit, the waste collection unit having a receiver (44) for receiving the manifold, said manifold comprising:a housing (158), said housing having a void space, at least one fitting (48) for receiving a suction line (50), the at least one fitting defining a fluid communications path into the void space;and an outlet opening (170) that allows fluid flow from said void space;characterized in that;the housing is shaped so that the opening (170) is positioned to be in registration with a complementary inlet port (138) on the waste collection unit receiver (44);and the housing includes at least at least one alignment feature (222, 224) integral with said housing said alignment feature positioned relative to the housing outlet opening so that, when said alignment feature is engaged with a complementary alignment feature on the receiver, the housing outlet opening is in registration with the receiver inlet port .

    The manifold of Claim 14, wherein said at least one alignment feature (222, 224) is a tab that extends outwardly from said housing.

    The manifold of Claims 14 or 15, wherein:said housing has a base (168) and an axis that extends through the base;and the housing is formed so that the outlet opening (170) is located in the base and positioned to be off axis from the base axis.

    The manifold of Claims 14, 15 or 16, further including a plurality of said alignment features (222, 224).

    The manifold of Claims 14, 15 or 16, wherein the housing is formed with a plurality of said alignment features (222, 224) and each said alignment feature has a distinct shape so that when the housing is initially fitted to the waste collection unit receiver (44) each alignment feature engages a distinct complementary alignment feature (118, 120) integral with the receiver.

    A medical/surgical waste collection unit (30), said unit including:a canister (36, 38) for receiving medical/surgical waste;a receiver (44) for removably holding a manifold (46) through which waste is flowed, said receiver being in fluid communication with said canister;and a suction pump (58) connected to said canister for drawing a suction through the manifold and said canister. characterized in that: a valve (132) is attached to said receiver for regulating fluid flow from the manifold to said canister, said valve having a drive member (136) positioned to be engaged by the manifold so that, when the manifold is mounted to said receiver, said drive member is displaced so as to urge said valve into an open position.

    The medical/surgical waste collection unit of Claim 19, wherein said drive member is further configured to be displaced upon removal of the manifold from said receiver so that, upon removal of the manifold, said drive member urges said valve into a closed position.

    The medical/surgical waste collection unit of Claims 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 or 24, wherein:there is a first canister (36) and a second canister (38) each canister having a manifold receiver (44) and a valve (132);the suction pump (58) simultaneously draws a suction on each of said canisters;and each said valve (132) prevents suction loss through the receiver associated receiver unless a manifold (44) is disposed in the receiver to hold said valve open.

    The medical/surgical waste collection unit of Claims 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 24 or 25, further including a biasing member (113) disposed against said valve to inhibit movement of said valve.

    A medical/surgical waste collection unit (30), said unit including:a canister (36, 38) for receiving medical/surgical waste;a receiver (44) for removably holding a manifold (46) through which waste is flowed, said receiver having an inlet opening (56) through which fluid can flow from the manifold into the canister;and a suction pump (58) connected to said canister for drawing a suction through the manifold and said canister. characterized in that: the receiver is formed with at least one alignment feature (118, 120) that cooperates with a complementary alignment feature (222, 224) on the manifold so that when the manifold is inserted in the receiver, the manifold outlet opening (170) is in registration with the receiver inlet opening.

    The medical/surgical waste collection unit of Claim 27, wherein:the receiver has a bore (68, 72, 76) into which the manifold is inserted, the bore having a longitudinal axis along which the manifold is inserted;the receiver inlet opening is centered along an axis that is offset from the longitudinal axis of the receiver bore .

    The medical/surgical waste collection unit of Claims 27 or 28, wherein said alignment feature is a slot (118, 120) formed in said receiver dimensioned to receive a complementary feature integral with the manifold.

    The medical/surgical waste collection unit of Claims 27, 28 or 29, wherein there are plurality of said alignment features (118, 120) and each said alignment feature is positioned to cooperate with a distinct one of a plurality of complementary alignment features (222, 224) formed on said manifold.

    The medical/surgical waste collection unit of Claims 27, 28, 29, 30 or 31, wherein said alignment feature is formed with a cam member (123) that cooperates with said manifold so that, as said manifold is rotated in the receiver, the manifold is urged toward the receiver inlet opening.
