Medical/surgical waste collection portable rover capable of zero setting the float used to measure the volume of liquid in the rover waste container

Abstract

A waste collection and disposal system (100) for use in health care facilities is provided. The system (100) includes a mobile waste collection unit (102) for moving between use areas in the health care facility to collect waste material generated during medical procedures including body fluids, body tissues, saline, etc. The waste collection unit (102) includes stacked upper (200) and lower (202) waste containers for receiving the waste material. During use, the upper waste container (200) can be emptied into the lower waste container (202) for temporary storage. In addition, independently controlled vacuum levels can be provided in the waste containers (200, 202) during complex procedures. Once a user desires to empty the waste collection unit (102), the waste collection unit (102) is wheeled to a docking station (104). At the docking station (104), the waste material is off-loaded to a waste drain (D) and the waste collection unit (102) is cleaned and rinsed for further use.

  2. 2
The medical/surgical waste collection rover of Claim 1, further including a pump disposed between said reservoir and the first waste container for pumping water into the first waste container and said controller is connected to said pump for controlling operation of said pump.
  3. 3
The medical/surgical waste collection rover of Claims 1 or 2, wherein said float element is slidably mounted to a rod that extends through the first waste collection container.
  4. 4
The medical/surgical waste collection rover of any one of Claims 1, 2 or 3, wherein:said means for determining the volume of liquid in the first waste container in the first waste container is configured to send an interrogation pulse towards said float element;said float element is formed from material able to reflect back the interrogation pulse as a float return pulse;and said means for determining the volume of liquid in the first waste container in the first waste container is further configured to: receive the float return pulse reflected by said float element;and based on the times when the interrogation pulse is transmitted and the float return pulse is received, determine the volume of liquid in the first waste container.
  5. 5
The medical/surgical waste collection rover of Claim 4, wherein:a reference element is mounted to the cart adjacent the first waste container and said reference element is formed from material, that in response to said means for determining the volume of liquid in the first waste container in the first waste container generating the interrogation pulse, reflects back a reference return pulse;and said means for determining the volume of liquid in the first waste container in the first waste container is further configured to: receive the reference return pulse reflected by said reference element;and based on when the times when the interrogation pulse is transmitted and the float return pulse and the reference return pulse are received, determine the volume of liquid in the first waste container. CA 02930748 2016-05-20
  6. 6
The medical/surgical waste collection rover of Claims 4 or 5 wherein said means for determining the volume of liquid in the first waste container is configured to generate the interrogation pulse in the form of an electromagnetic field.
