  2. 2
The surgical instrument (500) according to Claim 1, wherein a proximal end of the articulating tool assembly (17) includes a mounting assembly (235).
  3. 3
The surgical instrument (500) according to Claim 2, wherein the recess (238c) is formed in a portion of the mounting assembly (235).
  4. 4
The surgical instrument (500) according to Claim 2, wherein a portion of the mounting assembly (235) is pivotably secured to a distal end of the body portion (512) and is fixedly secured to a portion of the articulating tool assembly (17).
  5. 5
The surgical instrument (500) according to Claim 2, wherein pivotal movement of a portion of the mounting assembly (235) about an axis perpendicular to the first longitudinal axis causes the articulating tool assembly (17) to move between the first position and the second position.
  6. 6
The surgical instrument (500) according to Claim 2, wherein at least a portion of the coupling member (246, 247) is securable to a portion of the body portion (512) and at least a portion of the coupling member (246, 247) is pivotably securable to at least a portion of the mounting assembly (235).
  7. 7
The surgical instrument (500) according to Claim 2, wherein the mounting assembly (235) includes an upper mounting portion (236) and a lower mounting portion (238).
  8. 8
The surgical instrument (500) according to Claim 1, wherein the at least one coupling member (246, 247) includes a first coupling member (246) and a second coupling member (247), each coupling member being disposed in mechanical cooperation with at least a portion of the articulating tool assembly (17) and with at least a portion of the body portion (512).
  9. 9
The surgical instrument (500) according to Claim 8, further including a mounting assembly (235) supported on a proximal end of the articulating tool assembly (17), the mounting assembly (235) including an upper mounting portion (236) and a lower mounting portion (238), wherein the first coupling member (246) is disposed in mechanical cooperation with at least a portion of the upper mounting portion (236) and the second coupling member (247) is disposed in mechanical cooperation with at least a portion of the lower mounting portion (238).
  10. 10
The surgical instrument (500) according to Claim 9, wherein a proximal end (246b) of the first coupling member (246) is secured to a distal end of the body portion (512) and a distal end of the first coupling member (246) is pivotably secured to a proximal end of the upper mounting portion (236), wherein a proximal end (247b) of the second coupling member (247) is secured to the distal end of the body portion (512) and a distal end of the second coupling member (247) is pivotably secured to a proximal end of the lower mounting portion (238), and wherein the upper mounting portion (236) is securable to the lower mounting portion (238).
  11. 11
The surgical instrument (500) according to Claim 1, wherein the articulating tool assembly (17) is releasably retained in the first position when a portion of the spring arm (246c) is at least partially within the recess (236b) and the articulating tool assembly (17) is in the second position when the spring arm (246c) has been disengaged from the recess (236b).
  12. 12
The surgical instrument (500) according to Claim 11, wherein application of a predetermined amount of force disengages the spring arm (246c) from the recess (236b).
  13. 13
The surgical instrument (500) according to Claim 1, wherein the articulating tool assembly (17) is part of a disposable loading unit.
