Automatically-activated wireless laser scanning bar code symbol reading system

Abstract

An automatically-activated wireless code symbol reading system comprising a hand-supportable housing having a manually-activatable data transmission switch under automatic communication range dependent control. When a bar code symbol is read, the bar code reader is located inside the predetermined RF data communication range of the system, then the symbol character data string, produced at substantially the same time as the manual activation of the data transmission switch, is transmitted to the base station over the wireless RF communication link. If the device is outside the range, then an audible and/or visual indication is automatically generated, and the packaged symbol character data string is packaged and transmitted to a data storage buffer aboard the bar code reader. Then when the bar code symbol reader is moved within the communication range of the system, the buffered/packaged symbol character data is automatically transmitted to the base station by the RF-based data communication link.

15 claims: 8 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
A wireless automatically-activated hand-supportable bar code symbol reading system comprising a hand-supportable unit (1;15;30) and a base station (804) in 2-way communication with said unit, wherein the transmission of symbol character data from said unit to said base station is automatically controlled in a manner dependent upon the range of said unit from said base station, characterised by :means (8;22;36) for storing data waiting to be transmitted to a base station in a data storage buffer when it is detected (803) that the unit is located outside of a predetermined data communication range of the system;and means (5;19;33) for transmitting the data stored in the data storage buffer to the base station when it is detected (803) that the unit is moved within the predetermined data communication range of the system.
  2. 4
A system as claimed in any preceding claim, further comprising an indicator for indicating the state of operation of said wireless hand-supportable unit to the user of said wireless bar code symbol reading system.
  3. 7
A system as claimed in any one of claims 4 to 6, wherein said indicator comprises one or more light emitting diodes (LEDs).
  4. 8
A system as claimed in any one of claims 4 to 7, wherein said indicator is disposed within said hand-supportable housing.
  5. 9
A system as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the hand-supportable unit (1;15;30) is programmed to require the user to press a data transmission activation button to transmit a barcode after it has established a new communication link with the base station (804).
  6. 11
A system as claimed in any preceding claim, further comprising one or more LEDs arranged to be illuminated to indicate that there is stored data in the data storage buffer waiting to be transmitted to a base station.
  7. 13
A system as claimed in any preceding claim, capable of reading 2-D bar code symbologies, and having a manually-activated data transmission switch whose effective operation is conditioned by means for providing automatic range-dependent data transmission control.
  8. 15
A control process for a hand-supportable unit (1;15;30) in a bar code symbol reading system comprising the hand-supportable unit (1;15;30) and a base station (804) in 2-way communication with said unit, wherein the transmission of symbol character data from said unit to said base station is automatically controlled in a manner dependent upon the range of said unit from said base station, characterised by :storing (V) data waiting to be transmitted to a base station in a data storage buffer when it is detected (Y) that the unit is located outside of a predetermined data communication range of the system;and transmitting (Z,AA,BB,CC,DD) the data stored in the data storage buffer to the base station when it is detected (Y) that the unit is moved within the predetermined data communication range of the system.
