11 claims: 6 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A method of establishing wireless communications between an interrogator (26) and wireless identification devices (12), the method comprising utilizing a tree search technique to establish communications without collision between the interrogator (26) and individual ones of the multiple wireless identification devices (12), the method including using a binary search tree (232) having multiple levels representing subgroups of the multiple wireless identification devices (12), the method being characterised in that the tree search technique employs level skipping wherein more than one level of the tree (232) is skipped.
  2. 3
The method of any preceding claim wherein the level skipping is employed after a collision caused by multiple devices (12) responding.
  3. 4
The method of any preceding claim wherein the interrogator (26):sends a command causing each of the multiple wireless identification devices (12) to select a random number from a known range for use as that device's arbitration number;sends a request for identification to a subset of the full range of arbitration numbers;checks for an error-free response;and determines the arbitration number of every wireless identification device capable of communicating at the same time.
  4. 5
A method in accordance with any preceding claim wherein the wireless identification device (12) comprises an integrated circuit including a receiver, a modulator, and a microprocessor in communication with the receiver and modulator.
  5. 8
The method of any preceding claim further comprising using a slotted Aloha scheme in combination with the tree search scheme.
  6. 9
The method of Claim 8, further comprising sending a plurality of synchronisation pulse signals from the interrogator (26) to the wireless identification devices (12), each of the plurality of signals indicating a beginning of each of a plurality of slots associated with the Aloha scheme.
  7. 10
A communications system comprising an interrogator (26) and a plurality of wireless identification devices (12) configured to communicate with the interrogator (26) in a wireless fashion, the respective wireless identification devices having unique identification numbers, the interrogator (26) being configured to employ a tree search technique using a binary search tree (232) having multiple levels representing subgroups of the multiple wireless identification devices (12) to determine the unique identification numbers of the different wireless identification devices (12) so as to be able to establish communications between the interrogator (26) and individual ones of the multiple wireless identification devices (12) without collision by multiple wireless identification devices (12) attempting to respond to the interrogator (26) at the same time, the system being characterised in that the tree (232) search technique employs level skipping wherein every second level of the tree is skipped, or wherein more than one level of the tree is skipped.
