  1. 1
A prosthesis for replacement of at least part of a knee joint in a leg of a patient, the leg including a femur, a tibia and a mechanical axis, the prosthesis comprising:(a) a femoral component (200) adapted to fit on a distal end of the femur the femoral component including a lateral condylar structure (204) and a medial condylar structure (202), the lateral condylar structure (204) defining a lateral condylar bearing surface (212) and the medial condylar structure (202) defining a medial condylar bearing surface (210);and (b) an accommodation structure (400) corresponding to a proximal end of the tibia, the accommodation structure (400) configured to cooperate with the femoral component (200) and comprising: : (i) a medial accommodation surface (406, 440) configured to cooperate with the medial condylar bearing surface (210);wherein the medial accommodation surface (406, 440) and the medial condylar bearing surface (210) define a medial compartment;and (ii) a lateral accommodation surface (408, 442) configured to copperate with the lateral condylar bearing surface (212), wherein the lateral accommodation surface (408, 442) and the lateral condylar bearing surface (212) define a lateral compartment;wherein the medial and lateral compartments are asymmetric in a frontal plane of the prosthesis when the prosthesis is installed such that a line between points at which the lateral condylar bearing surface (212) contacts the lateral accommodation surface (408, 442) and at which the medial condylar bearing surface (210) contacts the medial accommodation surface (406, 440) is oriented at an angle that is not orthogonal to the mechanical axis of the leg;characterised in that the lateral accommodation surface (408, 442) comprises an anterior portion and a posterior portion, the posterior portion comprising a posteriolateral proximal surface that slopes distally as the posteriolateral proximal surface progresses in a posterior direction, wherein flexion of the prosthesis causes the lateral condylar bearing surface (212) to migrate posteriorily on the lateral accommodation surface (408, 442) to cause the tibia to rotate interiorly with respect to the femur during flexion.
  2. 5
The knee prosthesis of any preceding claim, wherein the accommodation structure (400) is part of an insert which is adapted to fit between the femoral component (200) and a tibial implant.
  3. 6
The knee prosthesis of any preceding claim, wherein the posteriolateral proximal surface includes a portion that is convex.
  4. 7
The knee prosthesis of any preceding claim, wherein the posteriolateral proximal surface includes a portion that is substantially flat.
  5. 8
The knee prosthesis of any preceding claim, wherein the posteriolateral proximal surface includes a portion that is substantially concave.
  6. 10
The knee prosthesis of any preceding claim, wherein the internal rotation of the tibia is at least substantially 8 degrees relative to the femur at substantially 130 degees of flexion and greater flexion angles.
  7. 11
The knee prosthesis of any preceding claim, wherein the accommodation structure (400) is thicker in at least some areas that cooperate with the lateral condylar structure (204) of the femoral component (200) than in corresponding areas that cooperate with the medial condylar structure (202) of the femoral component (200).
  8. 12
The knee prosthesis of any preceding claim, wherein a line between the distal most surfaces of the medial condylar structure (202) and the lateral condylar structure (204), at a flexion angle of substantially zero degrees, is oriented at an angle of approximately 3 degrees from a line that is perpendicular to the mechanical axis of a leg in which the knee prosthesis is implanted.
  9. 15
The knee prosthesis of any preceding claim, wherein the accommodation structure (400) includes edges adjacent its proximal surface which are rounded.
  10. 16
The knee prosthesis of any preceding claim, wherein the accommodation structure (400) and the femoral component (200) are configured to allow the femur and tibia to flex approximately 155° relative to each other, and whereby at said 155° angle, the tibia is internally rotated at an angle of at least substantially 8 degrees relative to the femur.
  11. 17
The knee prosthesis of any preceding claim, wherein lateral portions of the femoral component (200) anterior surface extend further in an anterior direction than medial portions of the femoral component anterior surface, whereby the anterior surface of the femoral component is adapted to assist in precluding subluxation of the patella.
  12. 18
The knee prosthesis of any preceding claim, wherein the accommodation structure (400) includes a proximal lateral surface with an arcuate swept surface, the swept surface adapted to assist in guiding tracking of lateral structure of the femoral component (200) on the proximal surface during at least some ranges of flexion between the tibia and the femur.
  13. 19
The knee prosthesis of any preceding claim, wherein the posterior surface of the medial condylar portion (202) of the femoral component (200) extends no farther than approximately 2 mm beyond the posterior surface of the accommodation structure (400) at substantially full extension.
  14. 20
The knee prosthesis of any preceding claim, wherein a plurality of sagittal cross sections in the medial compartment are different in shape than a plurality of sagittal cross sections in the lateral compartment.
