High performance knee prostheses
Abstract
A prosthesis for replacing at least part of a knee joint in a leg of a patient, including leg a femur, a tibia and a mechanical axis, the prosthesis comprising: (a) a femoral component (200) adapted to be placed on a distal end of the femur the femoral component including a lateral condylar structure (204) and a medial condylar structure (202), defining the lateral condylar structure (204) an area of lateral condylar bearing (212) and defining the medial condylar structure (202) A surface bearing medial condylar (210); and (b) a structure of accommodation (400) corresponding to a proximal end of the tibia, the structure of accommodation (400) configured to cooperate with the femoral component (200) and comprising: (i) a surface of medial accommodation ( 406, 440) configured to cooperate with the surface of medial condylar bearing (210); wherein the medial accommodation surface (406, 440) and the medial condylar bearing surface (210) define a medial compartment; and (ii) a surface side accommodation (408, 442) configured to cooperate with the surface side bearing (212), wherein the surface of lateral accommodation (408, 442) and the surface of condylar bearing side (212) define a lateral compartment; wherein the medial and lateral compartments are asymmetric in the front plane of the prosthesis when the prosthesis is installed such that a line between the points at which the surface of lateral condylar bearing (212) contacts the surface of lateral accommodation (408, 442) and wherein the surface of medial condylar bearing (210) contacts the surface of medial accommodation (406, 440) is oriented at an angle that is not orthogonal to the mechanical axis of the leg; characterized in that the surface of lateral accommodation (408, 442) comprises an anterior portion and a posterior portion, the posterior portion comprising a rear-lateral proximal surface being distally inclined as the lateral posterior proximal surface progresses in a posterior direction, wherein the bending of the prosthesis causes the lateral condylar bearing surface (212) subsequently migrate on the surface of lateral accommodation (408, 442) to cause the tibia rotate internally relative to the femur during flexion.
