15 claims: 6 independent, 9 dependent

  1. 1
An umbrella assembly (100), comprising:a support pole assembly comprising: a first, generally vertically extending support pole (102);and a second support pole(116) having a proximal end and a distal end and being curved therebetween, the second support pole (116) coupled with and extending generally transverse to said first support pole (102);a canopy assembly (106) coupled with the second support pole (116) adjacent the distal end;and a tilt assembly (132), characterise in that the tilt assembly (132) comprises: a transmission (136) configured to be driven by a crank handle (134);and;a drive shaft (132) housed in said second support pole (116), the drive shaft(152) having a first end coupled with the transmission (136) and a second end adjacent to the distal end of the second support pole (116);wherein the transmission (136) is configured to convert rotation of the crank handle (134) into rotation of the drive shaft(152) to pivot the canopy assembly (106) relative to the first support pole (1.02).
  2. 2
The umbrella assembly (100) of Claim 1, wherein the transmission (136) comprises a worm gear.
  3. 3
The umbrella assembly (100) of Claims 1 or 2, wherein the drive shaft (152) comprises a plurality of substantially rigid straight drive shaft (152a, 152b, 152c) members coupled at interposed joints (154a, 154b).
  4. 4
The umbrella assembly (100) of Claims 1-3, further comprising a tilt assembly having a driven members (182) and wherein the second end of the drive shaft (152) comprises a drive member (176) configured to direct a force to the driven member (182) of the tilt assembly so as to transmit rotation of the drive shaft (152) to rotation of the tilt assembly.
  5. 5
The umbrella assembly (100) of Claim 4, wherein the driven member (182) comprises a ring gear and the drive member (176) comprises a drive gear engaged with the ring gear.
  6. 6
The umbrella assembly (100) of Claim 5, further comprising at least one planet gear (198) arranged between the second end of the drive shaft (152) and the ring gear so as to define a planetary gear train and wherein an axis of the drive shaft (152) is substantially collinear with a pivot axis of the tilt assembly.
  7. 7
The umbrella assembly (100) of any of Claims 4 to 6, wherein at least one of a connection between the crank handle (134) and the transmission (136) and a connection between the drive shaft (152) and the tilt assembly provide a reduction function such that tilt system resists force applied to the tilt assembly so as to maintain a tilt orientation when no force is applied to the transmission(136).
  8. 10
The umbrella assembly (100) of any of Claims 1 to 8, further comprising:a coupler (120) defining a passage within which the second support pole (116) is received and in which the second support pole (116) can be extended and retracted relative to the first support pole (102), the coupler (120) being configured to selectively engage the second support pole (116) to fix the position thereof;a brace member (123) extending between the proximal end of the second support pole (116) and the first support pole (102), said brace (123) configured to support said second support pole (116) at the proximal end thereof and to accommodate movement of the second support pole (116) relative to the first support pole (102);a crank member (134) configured to rotate about a crank axis;said transmission (136) comprising a drive gear coaxially coupled with said crank member and a driven gear (140) configured to engage said drive gear to convert rotation about the crank axis to rotation about an drive shaft axis substantially perpendicular to the crank axis;and said drive shaft (152) including at least three substantially straight, rigid drive shaft members (152a, 152b, 152c), each of said drive shaft members (152a, 152b, 152c) being coupled with at least one other drive shaft member (152a, 152b, 152c) to transmit rotational motion from the first end to the second end thereof.
  9. 11
The umbrella assembly (100) of Claim 10, further comprising a tilt drive gear (176) coupled with the second end of the drive shaft (152) and a tilt driven gear (182) coupled with the canopy assembly (106).
  10. 14
The umbrella assembly (100) of any of Claims 1 to 9, 12, or 13, further comprising a holding sleeve (120) pivotally connected to the upper end of the first support pole (102), the second support pole (116) being slidably extended through the holding sleeve (120), the holding sleeve(120) being clampable to the second support tube (116).
