  1. 1
An apparatus comprising:a block encoder (222) for receiving a block of a first data stream and encoding the block of the first data stream to produce first and second portions of block coded data, the first portion comprising systematic frames and the second portion comprising parity frames;a CRC encoder (224) for CRC encoding the first portion and the second portion;and a transmitter (240) for transmitting the first portion of block coded data during a first portion of a block period, and transmitting a portion of a second data stream concurrently with the second portion of block coded data only during a subsequent portion of the block period.
  2. 11
An apparatus, operable with a signal including data blocks on a first channel, comprising:a receiver (254);and a processor (280) for: directing the receiver (254) to receive from the first channel, during a first portion of a block period, a first portion of block coded data of a first data stream and to perform CRC check on the first portion of the block coded data, wherein the first portion of block coded data comprises systematic frames;if a pre-determined amount of data from the first portion of block coded data is received without identified error, directing the receiver to discard from the first channel a second portion of block coded data of the first data stream, whereby the second portion of block coded data comprises parity frames, and directing the receiver during a remainder of the block period to receive from a second channel a portion of data of a second data stream which was transmitted concurrently with the second portion of block coded data of the first data stream;and if the pre-determined amount of data from the first portion of block coded data has not been received without identified error during the first portion of the block period, directing the receiver to receive from the first channel, during a remainder of the block period, the second portion of block coded data of the first data stream.
  3. 17
A method of transmitting a broadcast signal including primary and secondary data streams, comprising the steps of:block encoding a block of the primary data stream to produce first and second portions of block coded data, the first portion comprising systematic frames and the second portion comprising parity frames;CRC encoding the first portion and the second portion of block coded data;transmitting on a first channel the first portion of block coded data during a first portion of a block period;transmitting on the first channel the second portion of block coded data during a second portion of the block period;and transmitting on a second channel a portion of the secondary data stream concurrently with the second portion of the block coded data.
  4. 20
A method of transmitting a plurality of broadcast signals, each including primary and secondary data streams, comprising the steps of:block encoding blocks of the plurality of primary data streams to produce a plurality of first portions and second portions of block coded data, each first portion comprising systematic frames and each second portion comprising parity frames;CRC encoding the first portions and the second portions of block coded data;transmitting on a plurality of first channels the plurality of first portions and second portions of block coded data during a plurality of first portions and second portions of a block period, respectively, the plurality of second portions of the block period offset in time from one another;and transmitting on a second channel, time-multiplexed, the plurality of secondary data streams, such that each secondary data stream is transmitted concurrently with the transmission of the associated second portion of block coded data.
  5. 23
A method of receiving a block-coded broadcast signal, comprising:receiving on a first channel, during a first portion of a block period, a first portion of block coded data of a first data stream and performing CRC check on the first portion of the block coded data, wherein the first portion of block coded data comprises systematic frames;if a pre-determined amount of data from the first portion of block coded data is received without an error indication, discarding from the first channel a second portion of block coded data of the first data stream, wherein the second portion of block coded data comprises parity frames, and receiving on a second channel, during a remainder of the block period, a portion of data of a second data stream, which was transmitted concurrently with the second portion of block coded data;and if the pre-determined amount of data from the first portion of block coded data has not been received without identified error during the first portion of the block period, receiving from the first channel, during a remainder of the block period, the second portion of block coded data of the first data stream.
  6. 26
Processor readable media, having instructions stored thereon which when executed by a suitable processor, are operable to perform the method of any of claims 17 to 25.
