Abstract

A method of and apparatus for assembling software elements to form a component assembly (690) are described. A record (808) containing information identifying the software elements (1000, 1100, 1200, 1202, 690) to be assembled to form the component assembly is accessed. At least some of the software elements (1000, 1100) identified by the record comprise executable program code and at least one of the software elements is a load module (1100) comprising executable program code and a header (804) having an execution space identifier identifying which of a number of different security levels is required of a component assembly execution space. The software elements identified by the record are assembled to form a component assembly (690) that may, in use, be loaded and executed when the level of security of the component assembly execution space matches the level of security identified by the execution space identifier.

  1. 1
A method of assembling software elements to form a component assembly (690), the method comprising:accessing a record (808) containing information identifying the software elements (1000, 1100, 1200, 1202, 690) to be assembled to form the component assembly, at least some of the software elements (1000, 1100) comprising executable program code and at least one of the software elements being a load module (1100) comprising executable program code and a header (804) having an execution space identifier identifying which of a number of different security levels is required of a component assembly execution space;accessing the software elements identified by the record;and assembling the accessed software elements to form a component assembly (690) that may, in use, be loaded and executed when the level of security of the component assembly execution space matches the level of security identified by the execution space identifier.
  2. 17
Apparatus for assembling software elements to form a component assembly (690), the apparatus comprising:a store of software elements, at least some of the software elements (1000, 1100)comprising executable program code and at least one of the software elements being a load module (1100) comprising executable program code and a header (804) having an execution space identifier identifying which of a number of different security levels is required of a component assembly execution space;record access means for accessing a record (808) containing information identifying the software elements (1000, 1100, 1200, 1202, 690) to be assembled to form a component assembly, software element access means for accessing the software elements identified by the record;and assembly means for assembling the accessed software elements to form a component assembly (690) that may be loaded and executed when the level of security of the component assembly execution space matches the level of security identified by the execution space identifier.
  3. 21
Apparatus according to any of claims 17 to 20, wherein the record comprises a software element having assembly instructions specifying what software elements are required and how those software elements are to be assembled to form the component assembly.
  4. 22
Apparatus according to any of claims 17 to 21, wherein the software elements comprise at least one of a method software element comprising a collection of basic instructions, a data software element and a component sub-assembly.
  5. 24
Apparatus according to any of claims 17 to 23, wherein the load module comprises a plurality of load modules.
  6. 25
Apparatus according to any of claims 17 to 24, further comprising tamper detection means for providing the component assembly with a tagging and sequencing scheme for enabling tampering to be detected.
  7. 26
Apparatus according to any of claims 17 to 25, wherein the executable code of the load module is encrypted.
  8. 27
Apparatus according to any of claims 17 to 26, wherein the load module header includes public and private headers, the private header having a digital signature for use in determining whether the load module executable program code is intact.
