16 claims: 3 independent, 13 dependent

  1. 1
A radio-frequency identification ("RFID") interrogator (901) for interrogating a plurality of RFID transponders (702), the interrogator (901) including:a transmitter for providing a plurality of temporally spaced interrogating signals, wherein the signals include respective identifiers;and a receiver for receiving response signals from the respective transponders (702), the response signals including respective identity data that is derived from one or more of the interrogator (901) signals, characterised in that the interrogator (901) further includes a signal processor being responsive to the receiver for extracting the identity data from the response signals to determine the order in which the transponders (702) were first in receipt of an interrogating signal, wherein the identity data is indicative of the temporally spaced interrogating signal order.
  2. 3
A method of interrogating a plurality of radio-frequency identification ("RFID") transponders (702) with an RFID interrogator (901), the method including the steps of:providing a plurality of temporally spaced interrogating signals to the transponders (702), wherein the signals include respective identifiers;and receiving response signals from the respective transponders (702) with a receiver, the response signals including respective identity data that is derived from one or more of the interrogator (901) signals, characterised in that the method further includes the step of: being responsive to the receiver for extracting the identity data from the response signals to determine the order in which the transponders (702) were first in receipt of an interrogating signal wherein the identity data is indicative of the temporally spaced interrogating signal order.
  3. 10
A baggage handling system for baggage (700) that is tagged with respective radio-frequency identification ("RFID") transponders (702), the system including:an RFID interrogator (901) that transmits a plurality of temporally spaced interrogating signals into an interrogating space, wherein the signals include respective identifiers;a conveyor for sequentially progressing the baggage (700) through the interrogating space;and a receiver for receiving response signals from the transponders (702), wherein the response signals include identity data that is derived from one or more of the interrogator (901) signals, characterised in that the baggage handling system further comprises a signal processor being responsive to the receiver for extracting the identity data from the response signals and thereby determining the order in which the baggage (700) is progressed through the interrogating space wherein the identity data is indicative of the temporally spaced interrogating signal order.
