Medical line anchoring system

Abstract

An anchoring system (8) includes a simply-structured device which permits a portion of a catheter tube (15) or similar medical article to be easily anchored to a patient, desirably without the use of tape or needles and suturing. A unitary retainer (10) desirably includes a base (14) connected to a cover (22) by way of a flexible hinge (24). The retainer (10) is attached to a flexible anchor pad (16) including an adhesive bottom surface, which can be attached to the patient's skin. A catheter (15) is secured to a fitting (11), which in turn mounts to the retainer (10). Mounting the fitting (11) to the retainer (10) can be accomplished by inserting posts (20) of the retainer (14) through holes (67, 77) of the fitting (11), or by mounting the fitting (11) within a channel defined by mounting structures (140, 142) integral to the retainer (10c). The cover (22) is then positioned over the base (14), by bending the flexible hinge (24), and latched to the base (14). Several embodiemnts of the latching mechanism are disclosed. In one form, the latching mechanism includes one or more posts (20) on the base (14) which can be releasably locked into corresponding slotted holes (32) in the cover (22).

  6. 17
The anchoring system of any one of Claims 1 to 16, wherein the cover lies generally to at least one side of the channel in the open position to thereby expose the channel.
  7. 18
The anchoring system of any one of Claims 1 to 17, wherein the channel is formed as part of the cover.
  8. 19
The anchoring system of any one of Claims 1 to 18, wherein at least a portion of the lower surface has an adhesive surface to attach the anchor pad to the body of the patient.
  9. 20
An anchoring system for securing an elongated medical article to a patient, comprising:an anchor pad having an upper surface and a lower surface;anda retainer mounted on the upper surface of the anchor pad and being capable of receiving a portion of the medical article, the retainer including, a channel having a bottom surface and first and second surfaces, wherein the first surface is arranged relative to the second surface so that at least a portion of the medical article fits therebetween, anda cover having a first end and a second end, the first end of the cover being coupled to the retainer, and the second end of the cover being movable between a closed position, in which the second end of the cover lies generally above the channel, and an open position, in which the second end of the cover is spaced apart from the channel so as to allow ingress of the medical article into the channel.
  10. 24
The anchoring system of any one of Claims 20 to 23, wherein the retainer comprises a base, the cover being arranged relative to the base so as to cover at least a portion of the base when in the closed position.
  11. 28
The anchoring system of any one of Claims 1 to 27 comprsing a medical article to be secured.
  12. 29
The anchoring system of any one of Claims 1 to 28 comprising a medical article secured to the anchoring system.
  13. 30
An anchoring system comprising:a medical article having an elongated body at least of portion of which having a varying width;anda retainer having a channel having a varying width that is configured to generally match at least part of the portion of the elongated body, anda cover coupled to the retainer, located over at least a portion of the channel and movable between an open position and a closed position, the cover cooperating with the channel to inhibit at least part of the portion of the elongated body from moving relative to the retainer.
