Method for integrating radio networks and corresponding apparatus

Abstract

The present invention provides methods and apparatus for integrating the operation of a plurality of radio networks. The plurality of radio networks may utilize a common frequency spectrum. The radio center frequencies are adjusted so that frequency drift in relation to each radio network is reduced. Also, system information about the plurality of radio networks may be sent on a radio channel that is associated with one of the radio networks. An oscillator synchronizer synchronizes a first reference oscillator that is associated with a first radio network and a second reference oscillator that is associated with a second radio network in order to adjust radio center frequencies. With a variation of the embodiment, a reference oscillator of one of the radio network adjusts center frequencies for radios that are associated with the other radio network.

  1. 1
A method of integrating a first radio network (501) with a second radio network (503) wherein a first telecommunications service and a first centre frequency are associated with the first radio network, wherein a second telecommunications service and a second centre frequency are associated with the second radio network, and wherein the first telecommunications service is different from the second telecommunications service, the method comprising the steps of:(a) adjusting the first centre frequency with a first reference oscillator (505);(b) adjusting the second centre frequency with a second reference oscillator (509), wherein the second centre frequency is different from the first centre frequency;and (c) synchronizing the first reference oscillator and the second reference oscillator to integrate the first radio network with the second radio network, thus permitting the simultaneous operation of telecommunications services from both the first radio network and the second radio network.
  2. 11
An apparatus comprising:an oscillator synchronizer (517) configured to synchronize a first reference oscillator (505) of a first radio network (501) with a second reference oscillator (509) of a second radio network (503), wherein the first radio network comprises: a first radio (507) that is configured for a first centre frequency;and the first reference oscillator, the first reference oscillator being configured to adjust the first radio in accordance with the first centre frequency;and the second radio network comprises: a second radio (511, 513, 515) that is configured for a second centre frequency;and the second reference oscillator, the second reference oscillator being configured to adjust the second radio in accordance with the second centre frequency, wherein the second centre frequency is different from the first centre frequency, wherein, upon synchronization of the first reference oscillator and the second reference oscillator, the first radio network is integrated with the second radio network to permit the simultaneous operation of telecommunications services from both the first radio network and the second radio network.
