24 claims: 13 independent, 11 dependent

  1. 1
A plastic molding for use in dipcoating lenses in a diptank, the molding comprising two plastic lenses (16), a cold runner (15) edge gated to and extending between opposing left and right side quadrants (5, -5) of said two plastic lenses (16), said left side quadrant being defined as an area between 7:30 and 10:30 o'clock and said right side quadrant being defined as an area between 1.30 and 4.30 o'clock when the lenses are situated in a dipcoating position and during dipcoating in the diptank, and a hanger tab (1) extending from said cold runner (15), the hanger tab (1) including a stem (3) which connects at one end to the cold runner (15);characterised in that the hanger tab (1) further includes a head (4d) on an end of the stem (3) remote from the cold runner (15) forming a first gripping point, and a protruding slide stop (54) on the stem between the cold runner (15) and the head (4d) forming a second gripping point.
  2. 10
A molding according to any of the preceding claims characterised in that the hanger tab (1) is located substantially equidistant between the two lenses (16).
  3. 11
A method of manufacturing lenses comprising the steps of forming a plastic molding according to any of the preceding claims, gripping one of the first and second gripping points (4d, 54) of the plastic molding with a robotic arm, and then simultaneously fully immersing both lenses (16) in a diptank solution without immersing the gripped point (4d, 54).
  4. 15
A method according to any of claims 11 to 14, further comprising the step of handing-off the lens between first and second robot grips prior to dip coating, the first robot gripping the stem (3) at one of the first and second gripping points and the second robot gripping the stem (3) at the other of the first and second gripping points.
  5. 16
A method according to any of claims 11 to 15, wherein the step of dipcoating the lens includes maintaining the head (4d) vertically above cold runner (15) during the dipcoating.
  6. 17
A method according to any of claims 13 to 19, wherein the step of molding includes forming the lens and the cold-runner in the same molding process.
  7. 18
A method according to any of claims 11 to 17, wherein the hanger tab (1) is formed during molding and without cutting.
  8. 19
A method according to any of claims 11 to 18, wherein the steps of molding, gripping and dipcoating are performed in a single clean-room envelope.
  9. 20
A method according to any of claims 11 to 19, further comprising the step of curing the dipcoating material.
  10. 21
A method according to any of claims 11 to 20, further comprising the step of coating the lens with an anti-reflection coating.
  11. 22
A method according to any of claims 11 to 21, further comprising the step of inspecting the lens in an automatic inspection process.
  12. 23
A method according to any of claims 11 to 22, wherein the step of immersing the lenses (16) includes gripping said gripping point outside the periphery of the lenses (16).
  13. 24
A method according to any of clams 11 to 23, wherein said molding step includes molding the two lenses (16) connected by the cold-runner (15), with the stem (3) rising substantially vertically off the cold-runner.
