Abstract

A data communication system for communicating one or more payload streamed data signals and an auxiliary data signal, the auxiliary data signal being organised as one or more data packets according to a data packet protocol, each packet having a packet destination address, comprises: at least two data handling nodes, a transmitting one of the data handling nodes being arranged to transmit data to a receiving one of the data handling nodes;means associated with the transmitting node for formatting the packets of the auxiliary data signal into a streamed data signal format and for multiplexing the payload streamed data signals and the formatted auxiliary data signal into a bitstream for transmission;means associated with the receiving node for demultiplexing the input streamed data signals and the formatted auxiliary data signal and for reformatting the auxiliary data signal into packets according to the data packet protocol.

    A data communication system for communicating one or more payload streamed data signals and an auxiliary data signal, the auxiliary data signal being organised as one or more data packets according to a data packet protocol, each packet having a respective packet destination address, the system comprising:at least two data handling nodes, a transmitting one of the data handling nodes being arranged to transmit data to a receiving one of the data handling nodes across a data communication link;means associated with the transmitting node for formatting the data packets of the auxiliary data signal into a streamed data signal format and for multiplexing the payload streamed data signals and the formatted auxiliary data signal into a bitstream for transmission;means associated with the receiving node for demultiplexing the input streamed data signals and the formatted auxiliary data signal and for reformatting the auxiliary data signal into packets according to the data packet protocol.

    Apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the data communication link is the physical layer of an Ethernet link.

    A system according to any one of the preceding claims, comprising means for transmitting a clock signal, associated with the payload data signal, from the transmitting node to the receiving node.

    A system according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the one or more payload streamed data signals are audio signals.

    A system according to any one of the preceding claims, comprising means associated with the receiving node for routing packets of the auxiliary data signal in accordance with the respective packet destination address.

    A data router arranged to receive a data stream containing data packets, having associated destination indicators, via two or more input/output channels and to direct each packet to one or more input/output channels in dependence on the respective destination indicator, in which each input/output channel has an associated maximum data rate, the router comprising:an Ethernet data packet router;and a routing interface associated with each input/output channel;the routing interface and the Ethernet router being operable to communicate at a data rate higher than the maximum data rate associated with at least some of the individual input/output channels;the routing interface being arranged to supply data packets received via the data stream associated with that input/output channel to the Ethernet router in the form of Ethernet data packets;the routing interface being arranged to receive data packets to be output via the corresponding input/output channel from the Ethernet router and to provide the data packets as a data stream for output by that channel at a data rate no greater than the channel's maximum data rate;and the routing interface and the Ethernet router co-operating to selectively inhibit the transfer of data packets from the Ethernet router to the routing interface in order to avoid exceeding that channel's maximum data rate.

    A router according to any one of claims 9 to 12, in which the routing interface is arranged to assert control of the inter-party communication in response to receipt of a data packet from the Ethernet router, to inhibit receipt of a next data packet from the Ethernet router at least until the onward transmission of the newly received data packet via the input/output channel has started.

    A router according to any one of claims 9 to 13, in which the routing interface is arranged to assert control of the inter-party communication by asserting a carrier sense signal.

    A router according to any one of claims 8 to 14, in which at least one of the input/output nodes comprises means for multiplexing the output data stream with a payload data stream for transmission, and/or means for demultiplexing data packets from an input data stream comprising the data packets multiplexed with a payload data stream.

    A data transmitting node for transmitting one or more payload streamed data signals and an auxiliary data signal to a receiving node, the auxiliary data signal being organised as one or more data packets according to a data packet protocol, each packet having a packet destination address, the transmitting node comprising:means for formatting the packets of the auxiliary data signal into a streamed data signal format and for multiplexing the payload streamed data signals and the formatted auxiliary data signal into a bitstream for transmission.

    A data receiving node for receiving one or more payload streamed data signals and an auxiliary data signal, the auxiliary data signal being organised as one or more data packets according to a data packet protocol, each packet having a packet destination address, the packets of the auxiliary data signal being formatted into a streamed data signal format and multiplexed with the payload streamed data signals and the formatted auxiliary data signal into a bitstream for transmission; the receiving node comprising:means for demultiplexing the input streamed data signals and the formatted auxiliary data signal and for reformatting the auxiliary data signal into packets according to the data packet protocol.

    A data signal comprising a streamed payload data signal and an auxiliary data signal having data packets each with a packet destination address, sub-portions of each packet of the auxiliary data signal being interspersed amongst data bits of the streamed payload data signal.

    A method of data communication system for communicating one or more payload streamed data signals and an auxiliary data signal, the auxiliary data signal being organised as one or more data packets according to a data packet protocol, each packet having a packet destination address, the method comprising the steps of:a transmitting node formatting the packets of the auxiliary data signal into a streamed data signal format and for multiplexing the payload streamed data signals and the formatted auxiliary data signal into a bitstream for transmission;and a receiving node demultiplexing the input streamed data signals and the formatted auxiliary data signal and for reformatting the auxiliary data signal into packets according to the data packet protocol.

    A method of routing a data stream containing data packets, having associated destination indicators, received via two or more input/output channels and directing each packet to one or more input/output channels in dependence on the respective destination indicator, in which each input/output channel has an associated maximum data rate, using an Ethernet data packet router and a routing interface associated with each input/output channel; the routing interface and the Ethernet router being operable to communicate at a data rate higher than the maximum data rate associated with at least some of the individual input/output channels; the method comprising the steps of:the routing interface supplying data packets received via the data stream associated with that input/output channel to the Ethernet router in the form of Ethernet data packets;the routing interface receiving data packets to be output via the corresponding input/output channel from the Ethernet router and providing the data packets as a data stream for output by that channel at a data rate no greater than the channel's maximum data rate;and the routing interface and the Ethernet router co-operating to selectively inhibit the transfer of data packets from the Ethernet router to the routing interface in order to avoid exceeding that channel's maximum data rate.

    A method of transmitting one or more payload streamed data signals and an auxiliary data signal to a receiving node, the auxiliary data signal being organised as one or more data packets according to a data packet protocol, each packet having a packet destination address, the method comprising the steps of:formatting the packets of the auxiliary data signal into a streamed data signal format;and multiplexing the payload streamed data signals and the formatted auxiliary data signal into a bitstream for transmission.

    A method of receiving one or more payload streamed data signals and an auxiliary data signal, the auxiliary data signal being organised as one or more data packets according to a data packet protocol, each packet having a packet destination address, the packets of the auxiliary data signal being formatted into a streamed data signal format and multiplexed with the payload streamed data signals and the formatted auxiliary data signal into a bitstream for transmission; the method comprising the steps of:demultiplexing the input streamed data signals and the formatted auxiliary data signal;and reformatting the auxiliary data signal into packets according to the data packet protocol.
