  1. 1
A method comprising:receiving (902) a message burst from a base station (100) at a communications device;identifying (904) a set of physical carriers using the message burst, the physical carriers being designated for communications between the base station (100) and the communications device;identifying a common counter for application to a hopping function using the message burst;identifying (906) a subset of the physical carriers that are used for hopping using the message burst;identifying (908) a subset of the physical carriers to be used by the communications device for random access;selecting (910) a physical carrier from the subset of random access physical carriers to use for random access, said selecting taking into account the identified hopping physical carriers, wherein said selecting (910) comprises: selecting a first physical carrier from the subset of random access physical carriers;determining whether the first physical carrier is in the subset of hopping physical carriers;and if the first physical carrier is not used for hopping, then selecting the first physical carrier;and if the first physical carrier is used for hopping, then selecting a second physical carrier using the hopping function and the common counter;and sending (912) a random access burst using the selected physical carrier.
  2. 6
A communications burst from a base station (100) to a communications device, the communications burst containing data, the data comprising:an identification of a set of physical carriers;a common counter;an identification of the physical carriers of the set that are used for hopping;and an identification of the physical carriers of the set to be used by a radio to which the communications burst is sent for random access.
  3. 14
A method comprising:transmitting a communications burst from a base station to a communications device, the burst including: an identification of a set of physical carriers;a common counter;an identification of the physical carriers of the set that are used for hopping;and an identification of the physical carriers of the set to be used by the communications device for random access.
  4. 24
A communications device comprising:a receiver to receive (902) a message burst from a base station;a processor to: identify (904) a set of physical carriers using the message burst, the physical carriers being designated for communications between the base station and the communications device;identify the received message burst as being addressed to the communications device using an identifier of the communications device included in the burst;identify (906) a subset of the physical carriers that are used for hopping using the message burst;identify (908) a subset of the physical carriers to be used by the communication device for random access;and select (910) a physical carrier from the subset of random access physical carriers to use for random access, the selection taking into account the identified hopping physical carriers, wherein said selection (910) comprises the processor to: select a first physical carrier from the subset of random access physical carriers;determine whether the first physical carrier is in the subset of hopping physical carriers;and if the first physical carrier is not used for hopping, then select the first physical carrier;and if the first physical carrier is used for hopping, then select a second physical carrier using a hopping function and a common counter;and a transmitter to send (912) a random access burst using the selected physical carrier.
  5. 29
A machine-readable medium having stored thereon data representing instructions that, when executed by a system comprising a processor and a radio communications device, cause the system to perform the method of any one of claims 1 to 5 or 14 to 23.
