  1. 1
A method of producing a drug-eluting stent (20) having an expandable tubular body composed of linked filaments (24, 26) having top, side, and inner surface regions, and a drug-eluting polymer coating (32) containing a selected amount of drug, said method comprising (a) placing the stent tubular body on a chuck, such that the body is gripped by the chuck by contacting inner surfaces of the tubular body, for axial rotation of the tubular body with the chuck;characterised by ;(b) positioning adjacent to the tubular body on the chuck, a delivery tube (48) through which a drug-polymer solution (40) having a viscosity between 2 and 2000 centipoise and contained in a pressurizable reservoir (42) communicating with the tube can be applied directly from the tube to the top surface regions of the stent-body filaments, as the stent is rotated on the chuck and moved axially relative to the delivery tube;and (c) controlling the rate of movement of the delivery tube with respect to the stent filaments and the rate of dispensing of material from the reservoir through the tube, such that the drug-polymer solution is applied to top and side surface regions of the stent only.
  2. 5
The method of any preceding claim wherein the drug is a restenosis-inhibiting drug.
  3. 6
The method of any preceding claim, wherein said top and side surface regions of the stent-body filaments to which the drug-polymer solution is applied is coated with a polymer underlayer.
  4. 7
A method of any preceding claim, wherein said delivery tube is carried on a movable arm, and the arm's movement is under the control of a computer.
  5. 8
A method of any preceding claim which further includes applying a second drug-release layer containing a second drug to the inside surfaces of the filaments.
  6. 9
A method of any preceding claim wherein said depositing is carried out so as to produce a nonuniform coating on the stent-filament outside surfaces.
