Lower leg prosthesis

Abstract

A lower leg prosthesis comprises a lower foot plate (10) and an upper foot plate (12) disposed in spaced relationship to each other. The plates are elongated and aligned along a longitudinal axis, wherein the plates both are configured to be flexible in directions along the longitudinal axis, and wherein the lower foot plate (10) includes an outer portion that extends beyond the periphery of the upper foot plate. An intermediate elastomeric layer (14) is disposed between and attaches the lower foot plate and the upper foot plate. The elastomeric layer extends over a substantial portion of the upper surface of the outer portion of the lower foot plate (10), including to a substantial portion of the periphery of the lower plate.

11 claims: 10 independent, 1 dependent

  1. 1
A lower leg prosthesis comprising:lower and upper foot plates disposed in spaced relationship to each other, wherein the plates are elongated and aligned along a longitudinal axis, wherein the plates both are configured to be flexible in directions along the longitudinal axis, and wherein the lower foot plate includes an outer portion that extends beyond the periphery of the upper foot plate;andan intermediate elastomeric layer disposed between, and attaching together, the lower foot plate and the upper foot plate, wherein the elastomeric layer extends over a substantial portion of the upper surface of the outer portion of the lower foot plate, including to a substantial portion of the periphery of the lower plate.
  2. 2
A lower leg prosthesis as defined in Claim 1, wherein the elastomeric layer extends fully to the periphery of the entire lower foot plate.
  3. 4
A lower leg prosthesis as defined in Claim 3 wherein:the forefoot and heel plates together have a toe section, a mid-foot section, and a heel section;andthe forefoot and heel plates are separated from each other by a gap located in the mid-foot section.
  4. 5
A lower leg prosthesis as defined in Claim 4, wherein the gap that separates the forefoot and heel plates has a substantially uniform width in the range of 1 to 12 mm.
  5. 6
A lower leg prosthesis as defined in Claim 4, wherein the elastomeric layer comprises an anterior section disposed between the upper plate and the forefoot plate and a posterior section disposed between the upper plate and the heel plate, wherein a gap is defined between the anterior and posterior sections, adjacent to the gap between the forefoot and heel plates.
  6. 7
A lower leg prosthesis as defined in Claim 6, wherein the gap that separates the anterior and posterior sections of the elastomeric layer has a substantially circular cross-section.
  7. 8
A lower leg prosthesis as defined in Claim 6, wherein the gap in the elastomeric layer blends smoothly with the lower surface of the upper plate and with the upper surfaces of the forefoot and heel plates.
  8. 9
A lower leg prosthesis as defined in Claim 3, wherein:the forefoot plate and the heel plate both are formed of a composite material incorporating high-strength fibers;the forefoot plate has a thickness that varies along its length, from a maximum at its anterior end to a minimum at its posterior end;andthe heel plate has a thickness that varies along its length, from a minimum at its anterior end to a maximum at its posterior end.
  9. 10
A lower leg prosthesis as defined in any one of Claims 1 to 9, wherein the elastomeric layer incorporates a solid, high-density polyurethane.
  10. 11
A lower leg prosthesis as defined in any one of Claims 1 to 10, wherein the elastomeric layer has a thickness of at least about 2 mm over the outer portion of the lower foot plate.
