21 claims: 19 independent, 2 dependent

  1. 1
A suture comprising a multifilament formed of filaments formed of a material comprising a shape memory polymer composition wherein the composition comprises:a) at least one hard segment which has a T trans between -40 and 270 °C, and b) at least one soft segment which has a T trans at least 10 °C lower than that of the hard segment(s), which is linked to at least one hard segment, characterized in that the filaments in the multifilament are differently programmed concerning the degree of stretching or the degree of torsion or the degree of bending or a combination of these.
  2. 2
The suture defined in claim 1 capable of forming a self-tightening knot.
  3. 3
The suture defined by any one of claims 1-2, wherein at least one of the hard and soft segments is a thermoplastic polymer.
  4. 4
The suture defined by any one of claims 1-3, comprising a multifilament formed of a material comprising a biodegradable shape memory polymer composition, wherein at least one of the hard or soft segment(s) includes a biodegradable region or at least one of the hard segment(s) is linked to at least one of the soft segment(s) through a biodegradable linkage.
  5. 5
The suture defined by claim 4, wherein the biodegradable shape memory polymer composition has a linear mass-degradation rate.
  6. 6
The suture defined in any one of claims 4-5, wherein the hard segment comprises oligo(p-dioxanone)diol (ODX).
  7. 7
The suture defined in any one of claims 4-6, wherein the soft segment comprises oligo(ε-caprolactone)diol (OCL).
  8. 8
The suture defined in any one of claims 4-7, wherein the polymer comprises a biodegradable region selected from the group consisting of polyhydroxy acids, poly(ether ester)s, polyorthoesters, poly(amino acids), synthetic poly(amino acids), polyanhydrides, polycarbonates, poly(hydroxyalkanoate)s, and poly(ε-caprolactone)s.
  9. 9
The suture defined in any one of claims 4-8, wherein the polymer comprises a biodegradable linkage selected from the group consisting of ester groups, carbonate groups, amide groups, anhydride groups, and orthoester groups.
  10. 10
The suture defined in any one of claims 4-9, wherein the biodegradable linkage is 2,2(4),4-trimethylhexanediisocyanate.
  11. 11
The suture defined in any one of claims 4-10, wherein the polymer is completely degradable.
  12. 12
The suture defined in any one of claims 4-11, comprising a degradable thermoset polymer that comprises a covalently crosslinked crystallizable soft segment having a T m between 270 °C and-40 °C.
  13. 14
The suture defined in any one claims of 4-13, comprising a coating altering the degradation of the shape memory polymer.
  14. 15
The suture defined in any one of claims 1-14, wherein the ratio by weight of the hard and soft segments is between 5:95 and 95: 5.
  15. 16
The suture defined in any of claims 1-15, wherein the polymer has an inverse temperature effect.
  16. 17
The suture defined in any one of claims 1-16, wherein the polymer is capable of changing its shape in response to light.
  17. 18
The suture defined in any one of claims 1-17 further comprising an agent selected from the group consisting of therapeutic, diagnostic and prophylactic gents.
  18. 20
A button or traversing suture formed of a suture as defined in claim 1.
  19. 21
A button or traversing suture formed of a suture as defined in claim 4.
