    Claims of equivalent WO 03088818 A2 We claim:1. A monofilament or multifilaments formed of a material comprising shape memory polymer composition wherein the composition comprising: a) at least one hard segment which has a T trans between -40 and 270 °C, b) at least one soft segment which has a T trans at least 10 °C lower than that of the hard segment(s), which is linked to at least one hard segment.

    A monofilament or multifilaments formed of a material comprising a biodegradable shape memory polymer composition wherein the composition comprising:a) at least one hard segment which has a T trans between -40 and 270 °C, b) at least one soft segment which has a Tran s at least 10 °C lower than that of the hard segment(s), which is linked to at least one hard segment, wherein at least one of the hard or soft segments includes a biodegradable region or at least one of the hard segment(s) is linked to at least one of the soft segment(s) through a biodegradable linkage.

    A monofilament or multifilaments comprising a shape memory polymer composition a) at least one first segment which has a T tra n s between -40 and 270 °C, b) at least one second segment which is linked to at least one first segment, and which comprises ionic interactions of sufficient strength that the second segment has no melting or glass transition temperature, wherein at least one of the first or second segments includes a biodegradable region or at least one of the first segments is linked to at least one of the second segments through a biodegradable linkage.

    A suture comprises a monofilament or multifilaments defined in any one of claims 1-4.

    A suture comprising a combination of the non-degradable monofilament or multifilaments with biodegradable monofilament or multifilaments, wherein the monofilament or multifilaments formed of a material comprising shape memory polymer composition wherein the composition comprising:a) at least one hard segment which has a T trans between -40 and 270 °C, b) at least one soft segment which has a T tra n s at least 10 °C lower than that of the hard segment(s), which is linked to at least one hard segment;and wherein the monofilament or multifilaments formed of a material comprising a biodegradable shape memory polymer composition wherein the composition comprising: a) at least one hard segment which has a T tra n s between -40 and 270 °C, b) at least one soft segment which has a T trans at least 10 °C lower than that of the hard segment(s), which is linked to at least one hard segment, wherein at least one of the hard or soft segments includes a biodegradable region or at least one of the hard segment(s) is linked to at least one of the soft segment(s) through a biodegradable linkage

    A biodegradable suture defined in any one of claims 5-15, and 17-21 wherein the polymer comprises a biodegradable linkage selected from the group consisting of ester groups, carbonate groups, amide groups, anhydride groups, and orthoester groups.

    A method for using a shape memory suture defined in any one of claims 5-30 comprising deforming the suture to a predefined three-dimensional shape;and guiding the suture to arise automatically by activating the shape- memory effect of the suture.

    A method of closing a wound or body scission comprising:providing a suture formed of a shape memory polymer;forming a loose knot of the suture;and heating the suture to close the wound or body scission.
