  1. 1
A system for supporting services that use an approximately determined location of a device, the system comprising:a component (108) that receives a plurality of ambient signals at the location of the device;characterized by an analysis component that infers at least one approximate location of the device based on relative signal strengths of at least a subset of the ambient radio signals, wherein the analysis component employs an algorithm that infers the at least one approximate location of the device by scanning a list of n radio frequencies, resulting in a corresponding vector of measured signal strengths, s = (s 1 ,s 2 ,...,s n ), and utilizing a sort routine to compute a rank vector of the signal strengths, v = (r 1 ,r 2 , ..., r n ) in ascending order, where each r i gives the rank of the corresponding s i in s;wherein the rank vector is insensitive to any monotonically increasing function of the elements of s, such that the rank vector does not require absolute signal strength to determine the approximate location of the device;and a location associated component (104) that utilizes the approximate location of the device to support said services based on the approximate location.
  2. 18
A method for supporting services that use an approximately determined location of a device, the method comprising the steps of:receiving a plurality of ambient signal strengths at the location of the device (1904);characterized by determining an approximate location of the device based upon relative signal strengths of at least a subset of the ambient signals employing an algorithm that infers the at least one approximate location of the device by scanning a list of n radio frequencies (1906), resulting in a corresponding vector of measured signal strengths, s = (s 1 ,s 2 ,...,s n ) (1908), and utilizing a sort routine to compute a rank vector of the signal strengths, v = (r 1 , r 2 ,...,r n ) in ascending order (1910), where each r i gives the rank of the corresponding s i in s wherein the rank vector is insensitive to any monotonically increasing function of the elements of s, such that the rank vector does not require absolute signal strength to determine the approximate location of the device;and employing the approximate location of the device to support said services based on the approximate location.
