  1. 1
A system for determining an approximate location of a device, comprising:a signal component (108) that receives a plurality of ambient signals from a plurality of radio stations and measures the signal strength of the ambient signals received in the device;characterised by a ranking component that determines a rank vector of at least a subset of the ambient signals based on their measured ambient signal strengths, wherein said rank vector is mapped to an integer;and an analysis component (106) that infers the approximate location of the device by comparing the integer to a given plurality of rank hash codes, each of the plurality of rank hash codes relates to a permutation of ambient signal strengths corresponding to a possible rank vector.
  2. 18
A method for determining an approximate location of a device, comprising the steps of:measuring the signal strengths of a plurality of ambient signals received in the device from a plurality of radio station (1908);characterised by determining a rank vector of at least a subset of the ambient signals based on their measured ambient signal strengths, wherein said rank vector is mapped to an integer (1910);and inferring the approximate location of the device by comparing the integer to a given plurality of rank hash codes, each of the plurality of rank hash codes relates to a permutation of ambient signal strengths corresponding to a possible rank vector (1912).
