5 claims: 2 independent, 3 dependent

  1. 1
An engine valve assembly (32), comprising:a valve seat (50);an engine valve element (40) adapted to move relative to the valve seat between an open position and a closed position;a mechanically driven actuator (58) being adapted to move the valve element (40) to the open position;and a fluidically driven actuator (70) being adapted to hold the valve element (40) in the open position, the fluidically driven actuator (70) including an actuator piston (74) reciprocatingly disposed in an actuator cylinder (72), the actuator piston (74) having a rod (78) operatively associated therewith and being adapted to move the rod (78) and maintain the engine valve element (40) in the open position, the actuator cylinder (72) being in fluid communication with a source (84) of pressurized fluid, the source (84) of pressurized fluid being a lubricational oil system of the internal combustion engine (20) and having a magnitude of pressure less than 689.5 kPa (100 pounds per square inch);and said engine valve assembly further including a control valve (88) adapted to pass the flow of the pressurized fluid to the actuator cylinder (72) during movement of the valve element (40) toward the open position, and maintain the pressurized fluid in the actuator cylinder (72) during movement of the valve element (40) toward the closed position.
  2. 3
An internal combustion engine (20), comprising:an engine cylinder (22);an engine piston (24) reciprocatingly movable relative to the engine cylinder (22);an engine valve assembly (32) as set forth in any of the preceding claims, disposed in a port connected to the engine cylinder (22);said source (84) of pressurized fluid being a source of low pressure fluid in fluid communication with the valve actuator (70), a force generated by the source (84) of low pressure fluid being sufficient to move the valve element (40) and take up any lash associated with the valve element (40) and the valve actuator (70);and an engine driven mechanical linkage (58) mounted proximate the engine valve element (40) and adapted to move the engine valve element (40);wherein said control valve (88) is adapted to control flow of the pressurized fluid from the source (84) of low pressure fluid to the valve actuator (70).
