Engine valve actuation system

Abstract

An engine valve actuation system is provided. An intake valve (32) is moveable between a first position to prevent a flow of fluid and a second position to allow a flow of fluid. A cam assembly (52) is connected to move the intake valve (32) between the first position and the second position. A fluid actuator (70) is configured to selectively prevent the intake valve (32) from moving to the first position. A source of fluid (84) is in fluid communication with the fluid actuator (70). A directional control valve (88) is configured to control a flow of fluid between the source of fluid (84) and the fluid actuator (70). A control valve (82) is disposed between the source of fluid (84) and the directional control valve (88). The control valve (82) is moveable between a first position to prevent a flow of fluid between the source of fluid (84) and the directional control valve (88) and a second position to allow the flow of fluid from the source of fluid (84) to the directional control valve (88).

10 claims: 3 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
An engine valve actuation system, comprising:an intake valve (32) moveable between a first position to prevent a flow of fluid and a second position to allow a flow of fluid;a cam assembly (52) connected to move the intake valve (32) between the first position and the second position;a fluid actuator (70) configured to selectively prevent the intake valve (32) from moving to the first position;a source of fluid (84) in fluid communication with the fluid actuator (70);a directional control valve (88) configured to control a flow of fluid between the source of fluid (84) and the fluid actuator (70);and a control valve (82) disposed between the source of fluid (84) and the directional control valve (88) and moveable between a first position to prevent a flow of fluid between the source of fluid (84) and the directional control valve (88) and a second position to allow the flow of fluid from the source of fluid (84) to the directional control valve (88).
  2. 5
An engine (20) having an engine valve actuation system according to any one of claims 1 through 4.
  3. 7
A method of controlling an engine (20) having a piston (24) moveable through an intake stroke and a compression stroke, comprising:rotating a cam (60) to move an intake valve (32) between a first position to prevent a flow of fluid and a second position to allow a flow of fluid during the intake stroke of the piston (24);directing fluid through a control valve (82) to a fluid actuator (70) associated with the intake valve (32) when the intake valve (32) is removed from the first position;actuating a directional control valve (88) to selectively prevent fluid from flowing from the fluid actuator (70) to thereby prevent the intake valve (32) from moving to the first position during at least a portion of the compression stroke of the piston (24);sensing at least one operating parameter of the engine (20);and moving the control valve (82) to a closed position to prevent fluid from flowing to the directional control valve (88) and the fluid actuator (70) based on the sensed operating parameter of the engine (20).
