  1. 1
A method of processing a transmitted digital media data stream referred to as stream of data elements:a. receiving (900) the stream of data elements;b. holding (910) each data element that is received prior to an end of a respective time period in a buffer until the end of the time period, at which time the data element is released for playout, and wherein a data element is considered unreceived if not received prior to the end of said respective time period;c. monitoring (920, 1000) a loss rate at which data elements in the data stream are not received by the end of their respective time periods;and d. adjusting (930, 1040, 1050) the duration of the respective time periods based upon the loss rate;the method further comprising: estimating at least one parameter of an unreceived data element, wherein the estimating step comprises: receiving (800) a subsequent data element that follows the unreceived data element in the data stream;and characterized by estimating (810) the at the least one parameter of the unreceived data element based on the received subsequent data element, but not on data elements preceding the unreceived data element.
  2. 11
A system of estimating an unreceived data element of a transmitted digital media data stream referred to as stream of data elements comprising:a jitter buffer adapted to receive the stream of data elements and to hold each received data element until an end of a respective time period, at which time the data element is released for playout, and wherein a data element is considered unreceived if not received prior to the end of said respective time period;and a controller adapted to monitor a loss rate at which data elements in the data stream are not received at the jitter buffer by the end of their respective time periods and to adjust the duration of the respective time periods based upon the loss rate, characterized in that the system further comprises a lost data element recovery mechanism (94) adapted to estimate at least one parameter of an unreceived data element based on a received subsequent data element, but not on data elements preceding the unreceived data element.
