21 claims: 3 independent, 18 dependent

  1. 1
Tampon (10) comprising - an absorbent structure (16) - an apertured film cover (18) thermally bonded to the absorbent structure (16) through a plurality of discrete spots (22) arranged about the surface of the absorbent structure (16) to provide a cumulative cover-to-absorbent bond, characterized in that the plurality of discrete themially-bonded spots (22) define a bonded area and the bonded spots and the unbonded portions between the spots define a bond region (24), and bonded area covers about 5% to about 30% of the bond region (24), wherein the cumulative cover-to-absorbent bond has a shear strength of at least about 2 N.
  2. 8
A sealing element (40) for a sealing roller (42) for production of a tampon (10), according to any of claims 1 to 7, the sealing element (40) profiled with a sealing pattern, wherein the sealing pattern is defined by sealing knobs (44) arranged at distances to each other that project from a base (46) of the sealing element (40), each sealing knob (44) having a perimeter shaped to eliminate aggressive edges (48) and the sealing knobs (44) cover about 5% to about 30% of the planar surface area of the sealing element (40).
  3. 21
Process for producing a tampon (10) comprising the steps of:- thermally bonding an apertured film cover (18) to an absorbent structure (16) through a plurality of discrete spots (22) arranged about the surface of the absorbent structure (16) to provide a cumulative cover-to-absorbent bond wherein the plurality of discrete thermally-bonded spots (22) define a bonded area and the bonded spots and the unbonded portions between the spots define a bond region (24), and bonded area covers about 5% to about 30% of the bond region (24);and wherein the cumulative cover-to-absorbent bond has a shear strength of at least about 2 N;and - forming the absorbent structure (16) and apertured film cover (18) into a tampon (10),
