Dynamic networking between mobile stations in wireless networks

Abstract

Systems and methods allow for more efficient wireless networking. In one system (300), plural subscriber units form a direct network (310) and transmit and receive without base station mediation. In another system, base stations are networked (1000, 1400) so that one base station (1402) can take advantage of the second, networked, base station (1404). In one example, high-capacity lines (1204) are connected to one base station which is then networked to a second base station. Through the network, the second base station can utilize the high-capacity lines without being directly connected to them. In another example, the subscriber units can migrate between all base stations in the network. In another example, using networked base stations (1400) and unassigned time sequences or codes, calls can be dynamically reassigned between base stations to meet shifting demand.

  2. 2
A wireless telecommunications network in accordance with Claim 1 in which the subscriber units are any of a mobile telephone, a cordless telephone, a cellular telephone, a wireless telephone, a pager, and a personal communications unit.
  3. 3
A wireless telecommunications network in accordance with Claim 1 in which the subscriber units subscribe to different service providers.
  4. 4
A wireless telecommunications network in accordance with Claim 1 in which the subscriber units subscribe to the same service provider.
  5. 5
A wireless telecommunications network in accordance with Claim 1 in which the switch is included in a base station.
  6. 6
A wireless telecommunications network in accordance with Claim 1 in which the switch is not included in the base station but is accessible to it.
  7. 8
In a wireless telecommunications network, a method of assigning calls to one of a direct network and a base-station-mediated network (400) comprising the following steps:establishing a direct connection between a first subscriber unit and a second subscriber unit;monitoring communication between the first and second units (602);if the signal strength between the first and second units drops below a predetermined threshold during the communication, rerouting the communication through a switch (608).
  8. 12
In a wireless telecommunications network, a method of effectively increasing base station capacity comprising the following steps:defining a network (1207) between at least two base stations (1202,1206);if a capacity of a first base station (1202) is exceeded, the first base station checking whether a second base station (1206) in the network has available capacity;if the second base station has capacity, the first base station routing its communication to the second base station through the network (1207) between the first and second base stations.
  9. 13
A network as described in Claim 12 wherein a base station in the network is connected to high-capacity lines (1204).
  10. 20
In a wireless telecommunications network including at least two base stations in which communications cycle through plural channels using a first set of predetermined sequences, a method of defining a dedicated network between the base stations comprising the following step:allowing the set of predetermined sequences to be used in the dedicated network.
  11. 21
In a wireless telecommunications network including at least two base stations in which communications use a first set of codes, a method of defining a dedicated network between the base stations comprising the following step:allowing the set of codes to be used in the dedicated network.
  12. 22
A wireless telecommunications system, including a direct network and a base-station-mediated network, comprising:a base station (302);a switch (306);a first wireless subscriber unit (M1) controlled by the base station;a second wireless subscriber unit (M2) controlled by the base station;and a third telephone;the first and second wireless subscriber units communicating directly (310) with each other on a radio frequency channel, said direct communication not going through the base station;and the first wireless subscriber unit alternatively communicating with the third telephone, said alternative communication going through the base station.
  13. 28
A wireless telecommunications network in accordance with Claim 22 in which the subscriber units subscribe to the same service provider.
  14. 36
A wireless telecommunications system comprising:a first base station (1402);and a second base station (1404), said first and second base stations networked so that if a capacity of the first base station is exceeded, the first base station checks whether the second base station in the network has available capacity (1108);if the second base station has capacity, the first base station routes its communication to the second base station through the network between the first and second base stations (1110).
  15. 37
A system as described in Claim 36 wherein a base station in the network is connected to high-capacity lines (37A).
  16. 44
A wireless telecommunications system in which at least one network to connect subscribers is defined by having a first subscriber unit cycle its communications through a set of plural channels in a first predetermined sequence of channels;and    a second subscriber unit cycle its communications through the set of plural channels in a second predetermined sequence, the second predetermined sequence being selected to cycle through the channels with controlled phase shifts so as to decrease interference with the first predetermined sequence.
