11 claims: 7 independent, 4 dependent

  1. 1
A local multi-point distribution services system covering a geographical area, comprising a plurality of mutually adjacent cell-sites (302-308) defined by cell-site transmitters deployed throughout the area at statistically optimal locations using reflection based models, each cell-site having a radius with a carrier to interference ratio at said radius of a preselected level which substantially avoids co-channel interference due to frequency reuse, and a subscriber receiver (310) within the area covered by the system and utilising adaptive receiver technology to receive a signal from the one of the cell-site transmitters having a highest signal to interference plus noise ratio at said subscriber receiver.
  2. 5
A system as recited in any preceding claim, wherein said subscriber receiver (310) includes a front-end antenna combiner, receiver and feedback loop interfaced mechanically with an antenna mount arranged to effect repositioning of an antenna.
  3. 6
A system as recited in any preceding claim 1 to 4, herein said subscriber receiver (310) includes a front-end antenna combiner, receiver and feedback loop interfaced electrically with a beam steering network arranged to effect repositioning of an antenna.
  4. 7
A system as recited in any preceding claim, wherein said carrier-to-interference ration is of the order of 22dB.
  5. 8
A system as recited in any preceding claim, wherein power control at the subscriber receiver (310) is used to reduce interference.
  6. 10
A system as recited in any preceding claim, wherein the cell-site transmitters are arranged to transmit signals of which two or more have different frequencies.
  7. 11
A system as recited in any preceding claim 1 to 9, wherein the cell-site transmitters are arranged to transmit signals of which two or more have substantially the same frequency
