Adjustable arm rest

Abstract

There is described a tiltable chair including a base member, a seat, a back and a linkage assembly adapted to allow the seat and back to tilt downwardly and rearwardly and to allow pivotal movement of the seat about a pivot axis in substantial alignment with the hip joints of a user. Other aspects of the invention are to provide a vertically adjustable column for supporting the seat of the chair, a support assembly including a frame member having a central opening therethrough and a receptacle formed around the perimeter thereof, a carrier member adapted to fit inside the receptacle, a membrane of elastic material covering the central opening, and a pair of armrests adapted to be mounted to the chair to allow pivotal movement thereof.

15 claims: 4 independent, 11 dependent

  1. 1
An adjustable arm rest assembly for use on a chair having a scat back, said arm rest assembly comprising:an arm rest post;an arm rest support surface pivotably attached to said arm rest post, said support surface having a front portion and a rear portion, said front portion farther from said seat back than said rear portion, said support surface pivotable about a pivot axis that extends in parallel with said seat back and passes through said rear portion;a locking element adapted to be fixedly attached to one of said arm rest post and said support surface;a guide member adapted to be fixedly attached to the other of said arm rest post and said support surface, said guide member including and a slot having a plurality of mating portions, said slot adapted to receive said locking element into one of said plurality of mating portions, said locking element slidable with respect to said mating portions whereby said support surface may be secured in a selected angular position relative to said arm rest post through the selective positioning of said locking element with respect to said mating portions.
  2. 8
A chair comprising:a pair of armrests adapted to be mounted to the chair to allow pivotal movement in a lateral direction to accommodate the angle at which the forearms of a user are positioned on the armrests.
  3. 12
The chair of any of claims 8 to 11 wherein the armrests are adapted to tilt with the back such that the relative angle therebetween remains constant during tilting.
  4. 15
A chair comprising:a back frame including side members having a plurality of vertically aligned teeth extending outward therefrom;a seat carrier member connected to the back frame and having a pair of vertically extending sleeve members adapted to mate with the side members of the back frame, said sleeve members having a vertical slot therein;a pair of support arms slidably attached to the seat carrier sleeve members, said support arms having a pawl pivotally mounted thereto which extends through the slot in the seat carrier and is biased in a direction toward the back frame for engagement with the teeth, whereby a user pivots the pawl out of engagement with the teeth to move the support arm in a generally vertical direction and releases the pawl to lock the support arm at a desired height;anda pair of armrests pivotally mounted to the support arms, each support arm having a detent member in operable engagement with an irregular surface of the armrests, said detent members being biased in a direction toward said irregular surfaces to lock the armrests in a desired position.
