12 claims: 6 independent, 6 dependent

  1. 1
Claims of equivalent WO 9716386 A1 WE CLAIM:1. A low shrinkage, refractory glass fiber having a use temperature up to at least 1260°C, which maintains mechanical integrity after exposure to the use temperature and which is non-durable in physiological fluids, consisting essentially of the product of about 65 to about 86 weight percent silica, about 14 to about 35 weight percent magnesia, 0 to about 11 weight percent zirconia, and optionally, an effective amount of a viscosity modifier.
  2. 5
The fiber of any of claims 1 to 4 containing less than about 1 weight percent of calcia impurity, less than about 0.4 weight percent of iron oxide impurity, calculated as Fe203, and substantially no alkali metal oxide.
  3. 7
The fiber of any of claims 1 to 6 exhibiting crystal grain sizes of less than about 2 microns.
  4. 8
The fiber of any of claims 1 to 7 wherein said fiber exhibits a shrinkage of less than about 4.5% at 1260°C.
  5. 9
The fiber of any of claims 1 to 8 wherein the fiber exhibits a solubility of at least 30 ng/cm2-hr when exposed as a O.lg sample to a 0.3 ml/min flow of simulated lung fluid at 37°C.
  6. 10
A process for the production of the low shrinkage refractory glass fiber of any of claims 1 to 9 having a use temperature up to at least 1260°C, which maintains mechanical integrity after exposure to the use temperature and which is non-durable in physiological fluids comprising:forming a melt with ingredients consisting essentially of silica, magnesia, optionally zirconia, and optionally an effective amount of a viscosity modifier, and producing fibers from the melt.
