  1. 1
A method for operating a data packet transfer device (20) in an autonomous mode, comprising the steps of:in response to a power reset, directing an autonomous boot mode select signal to the data transfer device (20);fetching the address of a first packet control list using channel of a direct memory access engine (74) of DMA logic (72) associated with the data packet transfer device (20);enabling the DMA, logic (74) associated with the data packet transfer device (20) to transfer data between devices over a PCI bus (24) by: enabling the DMA logic as a master device (74) with access to the PCI bus (24) and to internal link registers;implementing state machine logic for fetching control parameters and data buffer pointers from the first packet control list;and controlling the transfer of data to and from the data buffers using the fetched control parameters and pointers, so as to effect data transfer between devices on the PCI bus(24).
  2. 4
The method of any preceding claim, further comprising the step of;controlling said data packet transfer device (20) to execute a PCI memory command on directing of the autonomous boot mode select signal.
  3. 5
The method of any preceding claim, further comprising the step of;controlling said data packet transfer device (20) to execute a PCI I/O command on directing of the autonomous boot mode select signal.
  4. 6
The method of any preceding claim further comprising the step of;controlling said data packet transfer device (20) to execute a PCI configuration command on directing of the autonomous boot mode select signal.
  5. 7
A data packet transfer device comprising:boot circuitry for directing an autonomous boot mode select signal to the data transfer device;memory means for storing a plurality of packet control lists (PCLs);a plurality of data buffers for use in transferring data;a plurality of control registers for use in controlling data transfer;PCI master logic (64) for interfacing the data transfer device (20) to a PCI bus (24);and DMA logic (72) for implementing state machine logic for fetching control parameters and data buffer pointers from a packet control list (PCL) and to control the transfer of data to and from data buffers;wherein the PCI master logic (64) is arranged to enable the DMA logic as a master device (74) with access to the PCI bus (24) and to internal link registers and to initiate data transfers over the PCI bus (24) on the directing of an autonomous boot mode select signal.
  6. 9
The data packet transfer device of claims 7 or 8, comprising circuitry for enabling the DMA master device access to an external RPL ROM device.
  7. 10
The data packet transfer device of any of claims 7 to 9, further comprising;circuitry for enabling DMA master access to an external PCI interface device.
  8. 11
The data packet transfer device of any of claims 7 to 10, further comprising;circuitry for controlling said data packet transfer device (20) to execute a PCI memory command on directing of the autonomous boot mode select signal.
  9. 12
The data packet transfer device of any of claims 7 to 11, further comprising circuitry for controlling said data packet transfer device to execute a PCI I/O command on directing of the autonomous boot mode select signal.
  10. 13
The data packet transfer device of any of claims 7 to 12, further comprising;circuitry for controlling said data packet transfer device to execute a PCI configuration command on directing of the autonomous boot mode select signal.
  11. 14
A computer system comprising:at least one peripheral (14) employing a data packet transfer bus;a computer (12), said computer comprising: a host CPU (44) comprising a PCI bus (24): and a packet transfer device (20) for providing an interface between said PCI bus (24) and said peripheral (14) according to any of claims 7 to 13.
