Rheometer

Abstract

A rheometer for assessing characteristics of materials includes a vessel (5, 25) and a rotor (6, 26) or the like disposed in use within the vessel. The vessel (5, 25) contains a material (7, 27), the characteristics of which are to be assessed. The rotor (6, 26) or the like is passed through the material to be assessed. The vessel (5, 25) and the rotor (6, 26) or the like are constructed and adapted so as to be simultaneously rotatable relative to each other about an axis, and movable in the axial direction relative to each other. At least one transducer (3, 23; 4, 24) is provided for determining rotational, and optionally axial, forces as a result of the relative motion in order to assess the characteristics of material (7, 27) within the vessel (5, 25).

12 claims: 5 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
A rheometer for assessing characteristics of materials, the rheometer comprising:a vessel (5, 25) for containing a material (7, 27), the characteristics of which are to be assessed;means (6, 26) disposed in use within the vessel for passing through a material to be assessed;the vessel (5, 25) and the means (6, 26) disposed therewithin being constructed and adapted so as to be simultaneously: rotatable relative to each other about an axis, andmovable in the axial direction relative to each other;andmeans (3, 23) for determining rotational forces as a result of said relative motion in order to assess the characteristics of material (7, 27) within the vessel (5, 25).
  2. 5
A rheometer as claimed in any preceding claim, characterised in that the vessel (5, 25) and/or the means (6, 26) disposed within the vessel is/are reciprocable in the axial direction thereof.
  3. 7
A rheometer as claimed in any preceding claim, characterised in that the means (6, 26) disposed within the vessel comprises a rotor means, for example in the form of a plurality of blades, optionally radially extending blades, mounted on a rotor shaft.
  4. 10
A rheometer as claimed in any preceding claim and including means for holding the rotor stationary.
  5. 11
A rheometer as claimed in any preceding claim, characterised in that the combined motion of the vessel (5, 25) and the means (6, 26) disposed within the vessel is such that the means (6, 26) disposed within the vessel describes a predetermined, for example helical, path through the material (7, 27).
