CPU with cache memory

Abstract

A Central Processing Unit 103 is provided having an instruction processor unit 201 for determining CPU instruction types. An instruction detector 211 is included in the CPU for detecting whether a determined instruction is a non-cacheable repeat operation instruction. The CPU has an execution unit 221 for executing instruction and for outputting a CPU signal indicating whether data associated with an instruction is cacheable.

11 claims: 3 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
A central processing unit (CPU) for a computer system having a cache storage device (207, 105), comprising:an instruction processing unit (201) for processing CPU instructions including an instruction decoder (209) for decoding said instructions for determining an instruction type;an instruction type detector (211) for detecting cacheable or non-cacheable instruction types;and an execution unit (221) for executing said instructions;said execution unit being responsive to the instruction type detector for outputting a cachability indicator signal indicating whether data associated with a detected instruction type is cacheable.
  2. 8
The Central Processing Unit of any of claims 1 to 5, wherein said cache storage device is coupled to the CPU via a data bus (230) having a predetermined data bus width.
  3. 9
A computer system comprising:system memory (107);memory controller for controlling system memory (109);and a central processing unit as claimed in any preceding claim.
