17 claims: 11 independent, 6 dependent

  1. 1
An absorbent article (2), comprising:a composite comprising a substrate and an absorbent (8) on said substrate, said composite further comprising oppositely disposed front (16) and back (17) end portions, a first releasably engageable member (40) on said back end portion (17) of said composite, a second releasably engageable member (22) associated with said front end portion (16) of said composite, said first (40) and said second (22) releasably engageable members being releasably engageable together, said absorbent article being characterized in that: said second releasably engageable member (22) is intermittently joined to said front end portion (16) and/or said first releasably engageable member (40) is intermittently joined to said back end portion (17) at a plurality of predetermined sections (32) for assisting engagement between said first and said second releasably engageable members (40, 22), wherein said front end portion (16) and/or said back end portion (17) tends to buckle or distort during engagement.
  2. 4
The article of one of claims 1 to 3 wherein said second releasably engageable member (22) is intermittently joined to said front end portion (16) or said first releasably engageable member (40) is intermittently joined to said back end portion (17) at a plurality of spaced apart lines (32) of joinder.
  3. 8
The article of one of claims 4 to 7 wherein each said joinder line (32) has a width of from about 1 millimeter to about 15 millimeters.
  4. 9
The article of one of claims 4 to 8 wherein said joinder lines (32) are spaced apart from about 1 millimeter to about 30 millimeters.
  5. 10
The article of one of claims 2 to 9 wherein said plurality of hooks are oriented in a single direction.
  6. 11
The article of one of claims 2 to 9 wherein said plurality of hooks are multiply oriented.
  7. 12
The article of one of claims 2 to 11 wherein said plurality of hooks have a hook density in the range from about 30 hooks per square centimeter to about 160 hooks per square centimeter.
  8. 13
The article of one of claims 2 to 12 wherein said plurality of hooks are generally arranged in rows and have a row density in the range of from about 3 rows per lineal centimeter to about 30 rows per lineal centimeter.
  9. 14
The article of one of claims 1 to 13 wherein said first (40) and said second (22) releasably engageable member is elastically disposed with said composite for applying a predetermined tension to said first (40) and said second (22) releasably engageable members when engaged.
  10. 15
The article of one of the preceding claims wherein a tension between 19.69 g/cm (50 grams per inch) to 196.99 g/cm (500 grams per inch) is applied between said first (40) and second (22) releasably engageable members when engaged.
  11. 16
The article of one of the preceding claims wherein one of said releasably engageable members comprises a stationary base panel (60) and a freely moveable flap panel (62), and said other releasably engageable member is releasably engageable between said stationary base panel (60) and said freely moveable flap panel (62).
