Gaseous ultrasound contrast media and method for selecting gases for use as ultrasound contrast media.

Abstract

The invention describes agents for enhancing the contrast of an ultrasound image. These agents are extremely small bubbles or "microbubbles" composed of specially selected gases. The microbubbles described by the invention have a long shelf life in solution and can be produced with a size small enough to pass through the lungs, resulting in an improved ultrasound image of the cardiovascular system and other vital organs.
