14 claims: 8 independent, 6 dependent

  1. 1
A negative pressure air bearing slider for a magnetic head of a rotary disc drive, said slider comprising:two side rails (20,22);a cross rail (24);a negative pressure cavity (28) disposed between the side rails and between the cross rail and a trailing edge of the slider;a leading edge taper (25) spanning a substantial portion of the width of the slider, characterised in that the slider includes, a pressure relief channel (41) which is open to ambient air pressure and is arranged between the leading edge taper and the negative pressure cavity extending generally transversely to a said side rails.
  2. 5
A negative pressure air bearing slider as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, in which said pressure relief channel or said vents includes a tapered or stepped profile.
  3. 6
A negative pressure air bearing slider as claimed in any one of the previous claims, further comprising:a pair of isolation channels (30,32) disposed between the negative pressure cavity and the side rails;and a pair of separating rails (20',22'), each separating rail being disposed between a respective isolation channel and the negative pressure cavity.
  4. 9
A negative pressure air bearing slider as claimed in any one of claims 6 to 8, in which said pressure relief channel is shaped into a V with the apex towards the leading edge taper to enhance air flow.
  5. 11
A negative pressure air bearing slider as claimed in any one of claims 6 to 10, in which said isolation channels and said separating rails terminate in the negative pressure cavity and so do not extend to the trailing edge.
  6. 12
A negative pressure air bearing slider as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, in which the side rails have leading portions, central portions and trailing portions and the leading and trailing portions are wider than the central portions.
  7. 13
A negative pressure air bearing slider as claimed in any one the previous claims, further comprising means (31) formed in the cross rail for communicating air from the pressure relief channel to the negative pressure cavity.
  8. 14
A negative pressure air bearing slider as claimed in any one of the previous claims, further comprising a divider bar (36) which extends from the cross rail to the trailing edge to define a first negative pressure cavity (28') and second negative pressure cavity (28").
