21 claims: 4 independent, 17 dependent

  1. 1
A recombinant DNA sequence comprising a tissue-preferential promoter DNA sequence obtainable from a maize plant, wherein the tissue-preferential promoter DNA sequence is a root-preferential promoter DNA sequence having at least 70 percent sequence similarity to the DNA sequence of Figure 9.
  2. 4
A recombinant DNA sequence comprising a tissue-preferential promoter DNA sequence which is obtainable from a naturally occurring DNA sequence encoding a plant metallothionein-like protein.
  3. 5
The recombinant DNA sequence according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein said tissue-preferential promoter DNA sequence is operably linked to a DNA coding sequence.
  4. 7
A recombinant DNA vector comprising a recombinant DNA sequence according to any one of claims 1 to 6.
  5. 10
A transgenic plant comprising a recombinant DNA sequence according to any one of claims 1 to 8.
  6. 14
A process for the production of a plant expression vector containing a tissue-preferential promoter DNA obtainable from a maize plant, wherein the tissue-preferential promoter DNA sequence is a root-preferential promoter DNA sequence having at least 70 percent sequence similarity to the DNA sequence of Figure 9, opearably linked to a DNA expressible in plants which process comprises (a) inserting said tissue-preferential promoter DNA in front of the DNA expressible in plants;and (b) splicing this construct in correct reading frame into a known plant expression vector which may contain one or more marker genes suitable for transformant selection.
  7. 15
A process for the production of a transgenic plant capable of expressing a homologous or heterologous gene in greater abundance in a well-defined tissue of the plant which process comprises transforming said plant, plant tissue, plant cells or plant protoplasts thereof by a known transformation technique which uses a recombinant DNA sequence comprising a tissue-preferential promoter DNA sequence obtainable from a maize plant, wherein the tissue-preferential promoter DNA sequence is a root-preferential promoter DNA sequence having at least 70 percent sequence similarity to the DNA sequence of Figure 9, and optionally regenerating the transformed plant from said transformed plant material.
  8. 17
The process according to any one of claims 14 to 16 , wherein the tissue-preferential promoter DNA sequence is obtainable from a naturally occurring DNA sequence encoding a plant metallothionein-like protein.
