High resolution sensor system for internal combustion engines and method of making the same.

Abstract

A high resolution sensor for internal combustion engines has symmetric and asymmetric magnetic encoders mounted on a support plate for synchronous rotation with the engine. Hall-effect sensor devices monitor the magnetic fields of the encoders and transmit signals to an Electronic Engine Control Unit. Ignition and fuel injection timing are deduced from the positions of the magnetic encoders. The encoders are magnetized on a fixture which establishes the size, strength, and location of each pole.

  1. 1
A sensor system for internal combustion engines comprising:a first annular magnetic encoder having an array of uniformly distributed and uniformly sized magnetic poles;a second annular magnetic encoder having an array of non-uniformly sized magnetic poles;at least one rotatable support for said first and second annular magnetic encoders;a first magnetic field sensor located near the rotary path of said first annular magnetic encoder;a second magnetic field sensor located near the rotary path of said second annular magnetic encoder.
  2. 9
A fixture for forming magnetic poles on a magnetic material comprising:a support;an electrically conductive wire disposed in a planar serpentine path on said support;magnetic field modifiers placed in the areas of said support between the serpentine loops of the conductive wire to vary the strength of the magnetic poles produced.
