EP0441089A2

Using command similarity in an intelligent help system.

Abstract

A data processing system is provided with an intelligent help system and suggests to the user, when the user enters a question or an erroneous command, a valid command. A plurality of intents are stored in the system which define the purposes of the various commands executable by the system. When the user enters a question or an erroneous command, the system looks up the intent corresponding thereto and semantically compares such intent with other intents. When another intent is found, based on such comparison, to be within a predetermined degree of similarity, the command defined by such other intent is offered as a suggestion to the user.

9 claims: 9 independent, 0 dependent

  1. 1
The method of operating a data processing system having a memory system for storing programs and data, a processor for executing said programs, input means selectively actuated by said user to input user actions comprising questions and commands, and output means to visually provide said user with suggestions, said method providing an intelligent help system for suggesting valid commands to the user when the user enters questions and erroneous commands, comprising the steps of:(a) storing within said memory system a plurality of intents, each intent defining the purpose of a different command;(b) in response to the user entering a question or an erroneous command, locating a first intent corresponding thereto;(c) semantically comparing said first intent with other intents to find a second intent having a predetermined degree of similarity to said first intent;and(d) creating a suggestion for said user to use a command corresponding to said second intent.
  2. 2
A method in accordance with claim 1, comprising:defining each intent with a plurality of words and storing such words in step (a);comparing the number of words within said first intent with the number of words in said second intent;and step (d) is performed only when the number of words within said first intent bears a predetermined relationship to the number of words in said second intent.
  3. 3
A method in accordance with claim 2 wherein said predetermined relationship is that the number of words in both of said first intent and said second intent is the same.
  4. 4
A method in accordance with claim 2 wherein said predetermined relationship additionally includes one wherein there is a one word difference in the number of words in said first intent and in said second intent.
  5. 5
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein semantic comparing is done by comparing each word in said first intent with each corresponding word in said second intent.
  6. 6
A method in accordance with claim 5 wherein said comparing is done by determining whether the words being compared are the same, synonymous, or antonymous.
  7. 7
A method of operating a data processing system having a memory system for storing programs and data, a processor for executing said programs, input means selectively actuated by said user to input questions and commands into said system, and output means to visually provide said user with suggestions, said method providing an intelligent help system for suggesting a valid command to the user when the user enters a question or an erroneous command, comprising the steps of:(a) storing within said memory system a plurality of intents defining the purposes of different commands executable by said data processing system, each intent defining the purpose of a different command and having a plurality of components;(b) determining in response to said user entering a command into said system whether such command is a valid command , a question, or an erroneous command;(c) in response to a determination from step (b) that such command is a question or an erroneous command, creating for the user a suggestion to further input a suggested command, said creating being done by steps comprising(c1) finding within said memory system a first intent corresponding to said question or said erroneous command,(c2) semantically comparing said first intent with other intents to find a second intent that is semantically similar to said first intent, and (c3) outputting the command defined by said second intent as said suggested command.
  8. 8
A method in accordance with claim 7 wherein step (c2) comprises:measuring a degree of semantic similarity between said first intent and said other intents,    comparing said degree of similarity to a predetermined threshold,    and when said degree of similarity is within a predetermined relationship to said threshold selecting said other intent being compared as said second intent.
  9. 9
A method in accordance with claim 8 wherein said degree of similarity is determined by comparing each intent on a component-by-component basis and assigning to each component of said other intent being compared a value dependent on whether such component has the same meaning, a similar meaning, or an opposite meaning to the component of said first intent being compared.
