  1. 1
An electrically conductive structural member with a de-icer attached to its outer surface, the de-icer having an exposed surface upon which ice accumulates during flight, comprising:- an electrically conductive member having a first side disposed in proximity with the outer surface of the electrically conductive structural member and a second side spaced from the outer surface of the electrically conductive structural member, - support means (46,48) for supporting the electrically conductive member, the support means (46,48) being disposed in proximity with the second side of the electrically conductive member and defining the exposed surface of the de-icer, the support means (46,48) being flexible in order to dislodge ice accumulated on the exposed surface upon movement of the electrically conductive member relative to the electrically conductive structural member, and - means (60) for supplying a short-duration, high-current electrical pulse to the electrically conductive member, characterized in that - the electrically conductive member is a unitary inductor coil (42) having no portions that move relative to each other, and - the inductor coil (42) and the support means (46,48) are formed in an integral construction that is attached to the outer surface of the electrically conductive structural member without modification of the electrically conductive structural member.
  2. 3
De-icer especially adapted for attachment to the outer surface of an electrically non-conductive structural member, the de-icer having an exposed surface upon which ice accumulates during flight, comprising:- an electrically conductive member having a first side disposed in proximity with the outer surface of the structural member and a second side spaced from the outer surface of the structural member, - support means (46,48) for supporting the conductive member, the support means (46,48) being disposed in proximity with the second side of the conductive member and defining the exposed surface of the de-icer, the support means (46,48) being flexible in order to dislodge ice accumulated on the exposed surface upon movement of the conductive member relative to the structural member, and - means (60) for supplying a short-duration, high-current electrical pulse to the conductive member, characterized in that - the electrically conductive member is a unitary inductor coil (42) having no portions that move relative to each other, and - a further electrically conductive member (112;122) is provided in which an eddy current is induced upon supplying an electric pulse to the inductor coil (42), and - the inductor coil (42), the support means (46,48) and the further member (112;122) are formed in an integral construction that is attachble to the outer surface of the structural member without modification of the structural member.
  3. 11
De-icer or electrically conductive structural member according to claims 10 and 2 or 10 and 3, characterized in that the further conductive member (112;122) is disposed intermediate the inductor coil (42) and the outer surface of the structural member.
  4. 13
De-icer or electrically conductive structural member according to claims 12 and 2 or 12 and 3, characterized in that the further conductive member (112;122) is disposed intermediate the inductor coil (42) and the displacement void (128).
