Epoxytriazine-capped polyphenylene ethers and method of preparation.

Abstract

Epoxytriazine-capped polyphenylene ethers are prepared by reaction of a polyphenylene ether with an epoxychlorotriazine such as diglycidyl chlorocyanurate, n-butyl glycidyl chlorocyanurate or mesityl glycidyl chlorocyanurate. The products undergo reaction with nucleophilic polymers such as polyamides and polyesters, to form copolymer-containing compositions which have excellent properties and which find utility as molding compositions and as compatibilizers for blends of similar polymers.

  1. 1
An epoxytriazine-capped polyphenylene ether composition comprising polymer molecules having end groups of the formula wherein:each Q¹ is independently halogen, primary or secondary lower alkyl, phenyl, haloalkyl, aminoalkyl, hydrocarbonoxy, or halohydrocarbonoxy wherein at least two carbon atoms separate the halogen and oxygen atoms;each Q² is independently hydrogen, halogen, primary or secondary lower alkyl, phenyl, haloalkyl, hydrocarbonoxy or halohydrocarbonoxy as defined for Q¹;X is an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aromatic radical or R¹ is a divalent, alicyclic, heterocyclic or unsubstituted or substituted aromatic hydrocarbon radical.
  2. 9
A method for preparing an epoxytriazine-capped polyphenylene ether composition which comprises contacting under reactive conditions, in the presence of a basic reagent, at least one polyphenylene ether with an epoxychlorotriazine of the formula wherein:X is an alkyl or aromatic radical or R¹ is a divalent aliphatic, alicyclic, heterocyclic or unsubstituted or substituted aromatic hydrocarbon radical.
