10 claims: 4 independent, 6 dependent

  1. 1
An optical recording medium comprising a substrate (8), a dielectric film (10) and a recording film (9) having a crystalline phase and an amorphous phase, in which medium information is recorded and erased by changing the phase of the recording film (9), characterized in that a metal reflection film (12) is provided on one side of the recording film (9), and that the reflectivity of the recording medium at a wavelength in the range from 600 to 860 nm is higher in an area where the recording film (9) is in the amorphous phase than in an area where it is in the crystalline phase.
  2. 8
An optical recording medium according to one of claims 1 - 7, characterized in that the material of the recording film (9) is chosen to have a higher refractive index in the amorphous state than in the crystalline state and to have a lower extinction coefficient in the amorphous state than in the crystalline state.
  3. 9
An optical recording/reproducing system comprising a laser for recording and erasing information on a recording medium having a laser wavelength in the vicinity of 800 or 830 nm, characterized in that the recording medium is a recording medium according to one of claims 1 - 8.
  4. 10
A process for recording and erasing information in an optical recording medium according to one of claims 1-8, wherein the erasing is carried out by irradiating the recording film (9) constituting the optical recording medium with a laser beam to elevate the temperature thereof to more than the melting point thereof but less than a minimum temperature necessary for amorphous phase formation and melt said recording film (9) and recording is carried out by irradiating the recording film (9) to elevate the temperature thereof to more than said minimum temperature and melt said recording film (9).
