10 claims: 8 independent, 2 dependent

  1. 1
A process for the preparation of a free-standing continuous polycrystalline diamond film, comprising:applying a seeding material powder to a substrate, the powder being applied to the substrate in an amount of from about one particle per square µm to about 10 particles per square µm and the particles having an average diameter of from about 0.1 to about 0.4 µm;heating the resulting powdered substrate in the presence of decomposed carbon-containing gas to form polycrystalline diamond on the substrate;and removing the diamond film from the substrate.
  2. 2
A process in accordance with claim 1, wherein the powder is diamond powder.
  3. 5
A process in accordance with any one of the preceding claims, wherein the powder is applied (1) from a suspension thereof by spin coating, dip coating, or spray coating, and/or (2) from a suspension of the powder and an aliphatic compound.
  4. 6
A process in accordance with any one of the preceding claims, wherein the average particle diameter is within the range of from about 0.1 to about 0.25 µm.
  5. 7
A process in accordance with any one of the preceding claims, wherein the carbon containing gas (1) constitutes from about 0.05 percent to about 5 percent of a gas mixture, and/or (2) is methane, or acetone vapor, or carbon oxide.
  6. 8
A process in accordance with any one of the preceding claims, wherein the decomposition is accomplished by heating to a temperature exceeding about 1,700°C.
  7. 9
The use as a seeding material powder for the preparation of a free-standing continuous polycrystalline diamond film of diamond powder in an amount on a substrate of about one particle per square µm to about 10 particles per square µm, the particles having an average diameter of from about 0.1 µm to about 0.4 µm, thereby providing reduced adhesion of the polycrystalline diamond film to said substrate.
  8. 10
The use as a seeding material powder in a process for the preparation of a free-standing continuous polycrystalline diamond film according to any of claims 1 to 8 of diamond powder thereby providing reduced adhesion of the polycrystalline diamond film to said substrate.
